This tutorial is written for Windows users, but the Mac version is really no different. There really isn’t much of a need for the tutorial since it’s so easy, but I wanted to put this out there to show just how easy it is. The 1st steps “Jailbreak” your iPhone (using Blackra1n) and then follows on to unlocking (using Blacksn0w, which is now part of the Blackra1n RC3 app).

You need to have iPhone OS 3.1.2 on the iPhone at this point to get started. Make sure you’ve backed up the phone. This is quick, painless, and so far as I know, problem free, but you need to be careful and doing a backup ensures that if someone does go wrong, you are still ok.

1. The 1st step is to head over to Blackra1n.com. Choose the version you need (Windows or Apple) by selecting the appropriate logo.

 
2. Save the file.

3. Now that the small file is downloaded, you will run the exe (step 4).

 
4. Run the installer. What this does is places the Blackra1n application on your iPhone.

5. No options, no frills… just a prompt to get it going. Make sure the iPhone is connected via USB, close iTunes, and click on make it ra1n.

 
6. After clicking “make it ra1n, you will see a few things happen with the device and onscreen. This all happens really fast though. Don’t unplug the iPhone during any of this. Do not unplug until the prompt above is displayed. During the time, the device will connect and disconnect from the USB controller a couple times. You will see “entering recovery” and “running…” come across the screen as well. When you get to the point where it says what we see above, it’s ok to disconnect and continue on.

 
7. At this point, you will now have a blackra1n icon on your device. You are now jailbroken at this point. To continue on to get the most from the jailbreak, you can install one of the package installers that Geohot has included in this application. I use Cydia personally. Clicking on Cydia will allow you to install this and it will go through the download, unpacking, and installation in less than a minute (depending on your connection). You will have a Cydia icon after the respringing (restart).

 
8. To go ahead and continue with the “UNLOCK”, click on sn0w to apply the unlock.

 
9. You will now see a check mark next to sn0w and an install button. Click the install button.

10. This step happens really fast and it’s done before you know it. That’s it really.

11. Once it’s completely done, you will see the above info. Close it and wait a few seconds for a restart and you are done. Unlocked and good to go.

What if I am already jailbroken?

If you have already jailbroken using blackra1n RC1 or RC2, you can skip to step 7. Instead of sn0w, you will see ra1n instead of sn0w. All you have to do is click ra1n to update to RC3 and then you will see sn0w instead. Continue on with step 7 at this point.

What if I have problems?

There should be no issues, but some are saying that Wifi is broken after they applied this.

Try a "Reset Network Settings" Also, this just enables custom Mob
ileConfig files. To fully enable tethering, go here on your iPhone and download a MobileConfig file for your carrier. Watch out for carrier fees for tethering.
