This post was published 2 months 24 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.I just got an email from one of my long time YouTube viewers asking which I would choose and why.
I was just wondering, if you had to choose between the Zune HD and the Zune 120, which would you pick. Nobody could give me a decent answer. I’ve been watching your videos ever since the first Zune came out so i thought you would be able to give me an idea about which is better. Thanks!
I have already answered this in so many words over on GotZune, so I will repost that. Keep in mind, this was written prior to my getting the iPhone 3GS. I am in the process of shutting my Zune Pass account down and just using my Zune 120 with purchased content and using the iPhone 3GS at work.
No, this isn’t a link to someone else’s story. This is my own opinion and I know I am not alone in this.
DON’T GET THIS COMMENTARY WRONG. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT ZUNE HD AND 4.0, BUT JUST NOT FOR ME PERSONALLY.
Not too long ago, Julie posted a bit over at Mobilitysite on why she carries a phone and MP3 player separately. I agree with her and those reasons carry over to the Zune HD and iPod Touch too.
Read on to find out why I will carry 4-5 different devices in my bag and I am not ashamed to do so…
OK, the 1st step is to indentify why I carry certain devices…
Here is what I use my smart phone for:
- Calls
- Texts
- To Do Lists
- Calendar/Appointments
- Minor browsing on the go
Here is what I use my Zune for:
- Listening to Music
- Watching Movies on the go
Here is what I use my DSLR Camera for:
- Taking Pictures
Here is what I carry a Nintendo DS or PSP for:
- Playing Games
I currently carry a phone, the HTC Touch Pro 2, that can do everything above. The issue is, at what cost? Battery life? Yep. That’s it mainly. Instead of why I don’t use functions like camera and music player on my phones, let me tell why I won’t use games and such on my Zune (or Zune HD if I get one).
1st off, the Zune HD and why I don’t really want one other than the new factor and the sexy looks. ONE WORD: STORAGE. When you’ve been rocking a Zune 120GB for the last 6 months, looking at a 32GB capacity almost seems like going from Whiskey back to Kool Aid. That alone is a big factor for me.
But what about all the cool features the Zune HD lets you do… Keep em’
Looking above at how I use my devices, you will see that I use my Zune as a media player. If I am on a plane, I can pop a movie on and get to work. If I use my phone to watch a movie, which it can do no problem, I might get to my destination and have to call someone to come pick me up and whoops… my battery is dead. hmmm.
OK, now for gaming. I won’t use the Zune HD, Zune 120, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc for gaming at all. Why? Because I don’t small screen game much period. I do own a DS and a PSP, but they are rarely used. You might be wondering if I would play more if I had comparable gaming on Zune HD or Touch right? Still, probably not. My Zune is a media player and I don’t want to sacrifice the battery life of my media player to play some games.
Browsing the net? I have a laptop for that most of the time, but if I need to look something up, my phone is just fine for this. Don’t need my media player to do that. My phone will be with me 99% of the time I am away from my desk or home, so ya… go Smart Phone go.
Camera… Well, since smartphone cameras are getting better, the random photos are getting snapped with my phone. When I really want to and know that I am going to take photos though, I prefer lugging my big old Sony Alpha DSLR camera out.
The convenience of a multi-use device is cool, but not always needed.
These are my opinions and this is how I roll. How do you do it?
