BlackBerry Equivalent of Lose It!

A few weeks ago, I posted about a good diet app for iPhone called Lose It!, which basically allowed you to track food and exercise for each day in calories.  It helped you set a limit of calories for each day and designed a weight loss plan based on height, weight, and sex.

Having switched back to BlackBerry in recent weeks, I was put on a search for a good diet app.  After testing and trying, I came up with 2 good apps for counting calories and tracking exercise: Livestrong Calorie Tracker and Calorie Counter by FatSecret.  More after the break.

Livestrong Calorie Tracker

In terms of features, Livestrong is probably the closest to Lose It! you can get on the BlackBerry.  It provides custom plans for calorie intake based on your goals, and also syncs to your online Daily Plate account at livestrong.com.  It also uses graphs and charts to track your progress, similar to Lose It!.  Unlike Lose It!, however, Livestrong provides access to a larger database online which gives you more information for more meals, restaurants, and brands.

Livestrong Calorie Tracker is available from BlackBerry App World for USD $2.99.

Calorie Counter by FatSecret

The other app, and my personal favorite, is FatSecret’s calorie counter.  It isn’t as pretty as Lose It! or LiveStrong, but it does get the job done.  Instead of graphics, it uses a standard BlackBerry interface, and has slightly less features than Lose It! and LiveStrong.  While you can still log your foods and exercises, there is no feature to create a custom diet plan or calorie budget.  However, with the BMI calculators and diet calculators on the web, you could easily find out your ideal weight and how to reach it.  Since I used Lose It! before, I know my calorie limit is 2255cals a day, so I just do the math on the foods I add and I can see how much I’ve eaten.

Like Livestrong, FatSecret also synchronizes to an online server at fatsecret.com and it also searches a huge database of foods, restaurants, and brands.

This is my recommendation.  Even though it lacks some features, the interface is easier, and it’s free.

Fatsecret is available in BlackBerry App World at no charge.
