Lot’s has happened in these past 2 days while I’ve been under the weather. Lots…

We’ve been ramping up for our 7th anniversary with some great contests. Make sure to get your entry in soon, the deadlines are December 12th, 2009. So far, we’ve posted contests to win 10 different phones!

I am not too sure what all we have left to put out there, but maybe some cases, some iTunes gift cards, and memory cards. Who knows?

I also wanted to mention that I am working on a new site design on the fly. There is more to be done, but the core is in place now. The goal was to be able to help the reader find content based on their interests much easier. There are separate RSS feeds for main subjects we cover too now. The main feed is still in place and remains ad free though.

iPhone Life Magazine. I just got some copies of the magazine today and my 1st article for them is inside. Page 56 has my article featuring former/present Windows Mobile Developers that have gone iPhone. It’s a decent article. I wrote an article or two for PPC Mag before they converted into iPhone Life, but this is the 1st one for the iPhone. I plan to write more in the future.

Last but not least, I was honored (I think) with an Ink Blot award from Warner Crocker in the Fifth Annual Life on the Wicked Stage Ink Blot Awards. Warner has be down for, “Best Geek I Follow on Twitter Even Though I Don’t Agree with What He/She Says Award”.

Best Geek I Follow on Twitter Even Though I Don’t Agree with What He/She Says Award: Tie-Michael Gartenberg and Chris Leckness

Thanks Warner. I do say some silly stuff here and there.

Thanks again reader, Mobilitysite is doing well and we love having you all along for the ride.

    The new scheme is cool
  • I like the Blog view, but there's a problem. There doesn't seem to be a way to comment on the stories or link to the page where you can comment on the stories unless there's a "Read More" link.

The workaround is to either do a search on the headline, click one of the tags and look for the story or click the author's name and look for the story. I wonder if some users won't figure that out and we'll miss their participation in the comments. (It took me a while to figure it out. :X)

    Can this be fixed, please?

    Congratulations.

congrats on the iphone article and I like the new layout.
  • The new layout isn't working for me in IE 7. Headlines of the recent articles are duplicated and overlay random areas in the left column -- other headlines, text of other articles, etc. It's barely readable. (I can E-mail a screen shot if necessary.)

Also, I don't like the fact that I now almost always have to click a Read More link. I like short articles to be completely readable on the Home page.

    Just my opinion, of course....

  • I would like to see a screenshot for sure. I have tested this before bringing online with almost every browser, including 7. I am not seeing what you are describing.

As for the read more links, it's a direction that I felt needed to be taken. The main page is more of a portal to our content now. I will be setting up and alternative view for blog style reading soon too though. This will be a tradition blog layout for the most recent posts.
  • Screen shot sent (to [your first name] AT mobilitysite DOT com.

By the way, I also don't see page numbers to see older stories. Is it just missing in my browser or is it coming later?

Personally, I liked the layout just before this one, with (I think) all of today's stories shown in larger areas and previous stories shown smaller.

  • Should be fixed now. 7 is so damn touchy. Found a random tag that my late night eyes must have missed.

The old layout showing most of the content is gone, but like I said about, I am going to craft an alternative view to appease those that would rather see that style. Also mentioned above, the new layout offers more content at the finger tips for you to find. Believe this or not, 80% of the entry into the site is a single post these days. We'll try to make everyone happy in the long run.
  • The problem seems to be fixed. The Home page is now readable again. :D

I suspect the 80% single post rate is due to search engine visitors or links from other blogs, Tweets, etc. I'm not sure if I'm suprised or not, though. :)

One other issue I've discovered is that the Home page (and the top of the story, for that matter) doesn't show how many comments there are. The top of the story shows how many retweets there are, I think (which I personally don't care about). This is exacerbated the long "gap" between the end of the story and the comment area -- you have the share buttons, the tags, a seemingly emtpy separator bar, the author bio and the related stories between the story and the comments.

I would suggest at least moving the tags to the top of post (and including the number of comments with an intra-page link to the comment area) and deleting the emtpy separator bar.

One last suggestion, too. With the default browser size that I use, I have to scroll to see the Recent Articles. I see the banner, the ad bar/RSS area, the menu bar, the Featured Articles and, finally, just the header for Recent Articles. Is there any hope of moving the Featured Articles section to a side bar (maybe above the platform-specific posts)?

    Thanks,

    Steve

P.S. Let's hear some suggestions from others. :D
