All I have to do now is start using the iPhone again and I can stop typing email and just speak it. Seriously. This software is that good. If it can translate “redneck” into proper english text, it’s good.
For the last couple of days, a new app for the iPhone has been buzzing all around the blogosphere. It’s Nuance’s Dragon Dictation for the iPhone. This app is free in the iTunes store right now, but I have a feeling that it won’t always be. It’s possible that they are giving it away because of some bad pub they got when it was discovered that the software transmitted contact data to their servers from your iPhone. Nuance has responded to those Privacy concerns recently though. Nuance has posted a statement on their own site. I buy their story personally…
Some people have expressed concern about what the new Dragon Dictation for the iPhone application does with your contact information. As you may have experienced already, Dragon Dictation for the iPhone goes through your contact list on your iPhone and uploads the names to our server. We do this for a pretty simple reason: we found that people are often dictating names from their address book and expect the names to be recognized. We take this information and create an anonymous user profile for your device that understands what names are likely to dictate into a document. It’s important to note that we only upload the names, not the e-mail addresses, phone numbers or any other personally identifying information from your contacts.
Head over to their blog to read the complete statement.
I decided to test this app out. If it can pass the sick redneck test, I’ll give it major props. Check out the video to see how it does…
Here it is folks, can Dragon translate the redneck?
Hurry up and download, it’s free for a limited time. (iTunes link)
