This post was published 2 years 4 months 24 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding. This morning, I read an article over at Engadget that was talking about Windows Mobile and Xbox playing nice together. This is based off a help wanted ad by Microsoft. Too bad I just bought my kids a PS3 for Christmas. Even though they have over 40 Wii games, the PS3 was calling their names, and mine. My son beat me 144-110 in NBA Live 2010 last night. How embarrassing. This had me thinking about posting a little article to talk about hobbies and gaming, etc.
I am not sure if everyone that reads Mobilitysite realizes that this site is just a hobby to me and all that contribute. Well, if you didn’t know, it’s true. This is just a hobby. It all started back with the Dell Axim too. I’ve been asked by fellow “Professional” Webmasters (and when I say Professional, I mean that it’s what they do for a living) how I manage to do this with a wife, kids, and a regular day job. I don’t really know that answer to be honest. When you love a subject/topic and are quite passionate, it’s not hard. Another thing I’ve done in the past is ignore other hobbies. Some of those hobbies that I’ve ignored a lot are sports and gaming. I used to watch more sports than you could imagine and I even played lots of softball at a competitive level too.
I put softball behind for my daughter when she started playing. Our games were on the same night in her 1st season, so that was the end of my career. The only real sports that I watch now is Alabama athletics and the occasional Atlanta Falcons, Braves, and Hawks games. I still watch the playoffs, Superbowl, World Series, etc, but I don’t make an effort to watch anymore. The site takes up so much time and I really love what I do.
The other Hobby I often neglect is gaming. I have always loved playing video games. I have played PC games, console games, and even MMORPGs. I had an Atari, Nintendo, Genesis, Playstation, and in the modern day – the Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3. Currently, we have 2 Wii (what is the plural of Wii?) and a PS3. I love console games, but my true love and addiction is in MMORPG games.
I have played them all on/off, well maybe not all of them, but most of the good ones.
- I played Everquest on/off for 5 years
- I played EQ2 on 2 different stints for about 1 month each
- I beta tested D&D Online
- I beta tested Guild Wars
- I played World of Warcraft for 3 years on/off. During one of my “On” times, I kind of became a celeb in game too.
- I’ve also tried and quit after a short time Age of Conan, Warhammer, Aion Online, and Tabula Rasa.
Why does that matter to anyone here? It doesn’t really, that’s why this is a rare off topic post. MMO games can be huge time sinks if you let them draw you in too deep. I have been drawn in a little deep a couple times, but I normally realize this and back out altogether for several months before jumping back in.
I am getting prepared to play a new MMO that is going to be released on Feb 2nd, 2010 that I have been eagerly waiting for for 6+ months, Star Trek Online. I am not much a Star Trek fan, but the idea of a space based MMO has me intrigued. I plan on giving it a try. They have an open beta coming up on January 6th. You have to preorder the game to get in though. The game sounds really cool though.
Has anyone else heard about Star Trek Online?
Does anyone reading already have plans to play it?
