I got the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus from Verizon a couple days ago, and I’m here to share my first impressions.

Starting with the Pre Plus, first thing I have to say is the build quality is a lot better. I had quite a few problems with the Sprint Palm Pre, and it’s all fixed now on the Pre Plus. Slider is solid, no creaks, everything is solid. I like the new front without the button, looks a lot cleaner, and the gesture area works just as well without the button. Keyboard has improved a little bit, still no where close to the Pixi Plus though. Verizon has been solid here, although I would lose EV-DO every once in a while. That could be related to the Pre Plus itself, because the Pixi Plus didn’t have that problem at all. So far, my main concern with the Pre Plus is battery life. I can barely make it through a day with moderate use.

Pixi Plus is almost identical to the Sprint Pixi, just adds Wi-Fi. Still has the awesome keyboard, the addition of Wi-Fi is a huge improvement. Cell reception has been better than the Pre Plus, and battery life is also better.

In case you were wondering, both the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus are running webOS 1.3.5.1. webOS is pretty much identical on the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus. The new Mobile HotSpot app is sweet. I can connect my laptop onto the web at anytime, and it’s awesome. The only downside is that it’s an extra $40 in addition to your data plan, and it has a 5GB cap. Battery drained like mad when using the Mobile HotSpot app, which is crazy because the battery life on the Pre/Pixi Plus isn’t that good to start with.

The Pre Plus is available for $149.99 on a two year contract and mail-in rebate, and the Pixi Plus is available for $99.99 on a two year contract and mail-in rebate.

Stay tuned for the full review coming soon!

Here is a quick unboxing, for those who like it. :)

If the Mobile HotSpot uses WiFi to connect the phone and PC, I'd expect horrible battery life. You'll be driving both the WiFi and cellular radios. WiFi is a notorious battery hog, and running both only makes it worse.

If you can tether with a USB cable, the drain should be a lot less.

As far as costs go, $40 sounds like a lot — unless you can connect multiple PCs at once. A few years ago, Verizon's smart phone plans were $45 per month, and tethering was another $15 — bringing you up to $60, which is what the laptop/aircard plans cost. I can't see them charging $40 for single-PC tethering….
