Zune Update includes some “Phone” drivers

zunephoneSeems like there may have been more to the Zune update than indicated. Long Zheng over at istartedsomething found drivers that indicate some kind of phone hardware. Maybe a “Zune phone” which has been denied repeatedly, or what I hope is Zune integration for Windows Mobile. What I would like to see is it starting with 6.5.3 or whatever they will call it and receiving an update for my Tilt2. I guess we will have to wait until next month and MWC to find out. What are your hopes and desires for Windows Mobile?

Coinciding with the scheduled Zune.net maintenance today, a new Zune software update was also released (version 4.2.202.0 for those playing along at home). What might appear as just a regular software update is actually hiding a very big secret. The illusive “Zune Phone” is pretty much confirmed.

As some of you might know, an .INF file is essential component of a driver package responsible for identifying the driver and associating it with compatible USB hardware IDs, and in this case, the Zune.inf file is responsible for associating devices with the Zune driver.

New to this version of the driver which was actually generated on October 20, 2009 are several lines which pretty much speak for themselves.

[Microsoft.NTx86]
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\MS_COMP_MTPZ
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0710
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_063E
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0640
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0641
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0642
%ZuneIp.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZIP, umb\urn:microsoft-com:device:mtpz:1

; Localizable strings
Msft = “Microsoft”
Zune.DeviceDesc = “Zune”

Phone.DeviceDesc = “Phone”

Moreover, just as how the current three generation Zunes are represented by three different IDs, there are three unique class IDs and specifically Product IDs (PID) that identify three potential “Zune Phone” models (not storage capacities) off the bat. My bet is that they’re not just capacity variants (since various Zune capacities are all grouped under the same PID), but three actual hardware SKUs.

A timely coincidence before Mobile World Congress? I think not.

Update: Whilst it is possible there might be system-wide Zune integration into Windows Mobile 7, this particular driver references specific hardware IDs that are locked to a vendor (Microsoft) and product which under USB body regulations cannot be masked, thus this has to be Microsoft devices. “Pink” anyone?

    Well I know this confirms one thing. They are rolling up mobile services and media into on package for an expected release date in Fall 2010. So now the software supports a phone device in its driver package and the new phone interface will mimick the zune's interface.

    In all likelyhood we will call this phone whatever it is, a Zune Phone. Pink just sounds stink. Unless its to support Susan G Komen for the Cure.

    I agree completely.
    I just hope they include it in 6.whatever so we can get it if no where else XDA. It certainly would be a good move on microsofts part.

    Maybe related, but search for “telephone” on the Microsoft Clip Art page, go to page 7, and look at what we have here!

    Just think, just five months after releasing the zune HD, m.soft is releasing another zune? more than likely they are adding zune to a few winmo phones

    Yes, they're probably just adding Zune services to Windows Mobile. Given the various rumors, maybe there will be three Windows Mobile phone types — WM 6.x Standard, WM 6.x Professional and WM 7.x. That could be how WM phones would identify themselves to the Zune PC software for media syncing.

    I don't know about USB regulations, but if Microsoft produces the specs they could argue that the OEMs are building “Microsoft” devices to those specs. That's far different than when Palm tried to usurp Apple hardware IDs so the Pre could sync with iTunes.
