Even though Greed is my main Android feed reader, another fabulous app that compiles feeds by category from major online sources like TechCrunch, Perez Hilton, et cetera, is Mippin Buzz Deck. Mippin has collected their Buzz widgets into one slick application that utilizes smooth scrolling “cards”, much like the Palm Pre, to display news articles. Surprisingly enough, Buzz Deck doesn’t include a widget but is an elegant and versatile feed app nonetheless.
]Buzz Deck allows a user to add customized cards to display a news feed from a specific site. There is an indicator at the top of the screen to show how many cards are currently available. Navigation is vertible eye candy with the way I can zoom in and out of the cards as I select each one, although the cards need to be more fully customizable. A valuable improvement would be the ability to define the number of articles downloaded for each card. Still, the cards can be removed, re-added, and re-organized, which are functions that work flawlessly.
The app includes a pre-loaded set of News Stream Cards or categories similar to Mippin’s Buzz widgets like Mobile Buzz and Tech Buzz. Facebook and Twitter are also options, and allow for quick status updates right from the card. My favorite feature is the final card on the far right of the app. From there, I can add any website’s feed as a separate card just in case Buzz Deck’s all-inclusive feeds don’t cull the news I exactly want.
Photos and videos embedded within articles are handled the same way in Buzz Deck as they are in Buzz widgets; photos get bigger after one tap and videos launch in a browser window or YouTube after one tab. One tap can also bring up a list of available share options like Facebook, Twitter, et al.
Responsive, reliable, and flashy, Mippin Buzz Deck is a solid feed reader choice for light news readers. Since adding individual cards can become tedious, scope of the News Stream Cards is surprisingly comprehensive. There is not a direct option to import Google Feeds, but a card can be manually added to browse those news bits too. The inclusion of Facebook and Twitter functionality only adds to Buzz Deck’s appeal. High marks overall for this free app, now available on the Android Market for free.
