This rumor is coming from Digitimes, my favorite Taiwanese snipe hunters so take this with the appropriate grains of salt, but they say that Nokia has a tablet coming.
A Senior Research Analyst (whatever that is) at Digitimes says that Nokia is preparing a 7 or 9 inch tablet for release in the fourth quarter of this year. In addition the analyst contends that the tablet will be ARM based and run Meego.
The analyst says that Nokia has already made 100 engineering samples of the new iPad rival, which is being manufactured by Foxconn International Holdings, which is a Hong Kong based subsidiary of the more infamous Foxconn based in China. Nokia is expected to provide the their tablet through their Telecom partners, just as they did with their Booklet mini-laptop.
It would be somewhat appropriate if Nokia is really planning to sell this tablet via their Telecom channels, since I expect it to flop even more badly than the Booklet did. Nokia’s recent tech history has been filled with instances of them arriving late to the party with badly overpriced devices. I expect a Nokia tablet to be more of the same…if it happens at all. A hundred engineering samples is a lot of devices to have out there and still avoid some kind of leak or picture, especially if it just months from release. Also, there have been no rumbles from the usual suspects of a new Nokia product being spotted on website logs. I will believe this one when I see it.
