app-catalog-icon Well, it looks like HP is serious about making a run at the mobile marketshare it lost long ago, and they are going to use webOS to do it.

In very welcome news today, we are hearing from many different developers that an email went out from Palm saying that they were not only dropping the $50 fee for registering an application on Palm’s webOS App Catalog, but REFUNDING the money of everyone who had already paid, from day one. That is nearly two years worth of fees.

I can’t think of any better way to kickstart developer activity for webOS then to not only remove the fee, but also have the new owners show how much they appreciate and value developer’s effort by refunding past fees paid. Its a great way to build confidence and enthusiasm in both developers and users and a great move from Palm and HP.

I am DEFINETLY looking forward to seeing a webOS tablet ASAP, get right on that please guys.

Check out the entire email from Palm after the jump.

These are exciting times for Palm and our developer community. The Hot Apps promotion that we kicked off back in February is about to end with over 400 developers receiving a share of a million dollars. We recently launched the Summer Half Off promotion—a 50% discount for nearly every app in our catalog that was funded by Palm; developers still get their full earnings for each sale, but customers get half off. And we’re just getting started.

In July, we’re launching the new PDK Hot Apps promotion—another million dollars to developers, this time focused on the C/C++ apps that were excluded from the original Hot Apps promotion.

And we have one more program change that will benefit all developers. When we launched the developer program, we introduced a $50 per app fee to submit apps into our catalog. Effective immediately, we’re waiving this fee and refunding to all developers any $50 fees collected in the past. If you’re one such developer, you will see a credit in your PayPal account in the near future.

Thank you for being part of the webOS community. We will continue to evolve the Developer Program as together we build an incredible application catalog for customers.

If you have any questions about these upcoming changes, please contact us at pdc@palm.com.

That's nice for WebOS developers, but I wonder how HP's stockholders and employees feel. :D I can understand giving something back to people who paid recently (2-6 months ago), but everybody? I guess that does avoid possible bad feelings from people who just missed the cutoff, though.

And if HP can give $50 back that was paid over 2 years ago, why can't Amazon give me something for the Kindle that I paid $259 for less than 60 days before their $70 price cut? :X
