It appears that Microsoft is already keeping one of its promises concerning the Windows Phone 7 release. The Zune library is about to go international at long last..and it is taking Zune Pass with it apparently.
A page discovered on the Zune.net UK site reveals that Zune Pass will be available in the UK as well as the pricing that British users can expect, and I would imagine most European rates will be roughly equivalent. A 1 month subscription to Zune Pass will cost £8.99 (which is about the price of a CD) and a 3 month subscription £26.97. A free 14 day trial will also be on offer. Zune Pass allows subscribers to stream unlimited music from the Zune library as well as to keep 10 songs a month.
The Zune library and player software is a lynchpin of Windows Phone 7 and while it was rumored that Zune Pass would finally be included outside the US, this is the first apparent confirmation. Microsoft had promised that the Zune system would be available internationally at the launch of Windows Phone, but this seems to indicate it will actually be released in advance. This is great news and a very smart move on Redmond’s part. This way, the bugs in the system can be worked out well in advance of the spotlight that will be Windows Phone at the release, currently expected in October. Needless to say, the tech press and bloggers will be looking for every misstep or blemish in the release, so it is very smart to limit the variable as much as possible.
Of course after more than 35 years one would think Microsoft would have earned the benefit of the doubt from the press, but hey…that’s the way we roll.
