Augen GENTOUCH KMart began advertising the Augen GENTOUCH just over a week ago for a sale price of $149.99 (regularly $169.99).  The Augen GENTOUCH is a 7 inch, resistive touch, Android tablet.  Unfortunately, KMart did not get very many of these devices to sell.  In fact, some KMart stores have yet to receive their first units.

As best as I have been able to determine, the Augen GENTOUCH is manufactured by China-based Chitec the same company that manufactures the X10 MID that I reviewed a few weeks ago.

My contact at PandaWill.com has just let me know about a new Android 2.1 device that they will be selling, the Gpad G10, which apparently competes favorably with Augen GENTOUCH.  While the Gpad G10 is priced comparably (at $184.99 with shipping) the Gpad G10 includes a camera, 3D acceleration, multi-touch, a G-sensor and 3G capability.

Keep your eyes open for my unboxing and review after the device arrives.

Gpad G10

    Rich…..a few clarifications…

    1. G10 claims to have multitouch, but employs a resistive screen ? You might want to think about that.

    2. 800Mhz is the theoretical upper limit of the TCC8902, Augen also claimed theirs runs at 800Mhz ( as a few others who put out similar units, look, I'm sure you'll find them ), yet they all seem to be actually running at 600Mhz nominally.

    3. ( and perhaps most importantly ) All these tablet makers seem to be claiming they'll support THE Android Market, but I've yet to come across ONE manufacturer/remarketer who's actually PART of the OHA ( Open Handset Alliance ), nor touted by Google as an actual Android partner. As an IHV you can license Android or work off of the AOSP, but that doesn't give you access to Google applications, and guess what, The Android Market is in fact one of those applications. Don't believe me, check it out.

Marcelo, I agree. In fact, you've got to read this:

If the posting is true, and as I believe that ChiTec makes both the Augen GENTOUCH and the G10, I may never see the G10.

More later-assuming that I learn more.

    Rich,

I caught that, and responded to them as well. I don't think Augen had any malicious intent on their part, especially after the couple of talks I've had with one of their marketing people. They just got rushed by KMart it seems. Now, as to the future, frankly, I think DUE HASTE is the order of business here. Frankly, this whole thing about “Google Apps” is getting long in the tooth.

    GMail access….ubiquitous.
    Android Market….ubiquitous.

Maps…..you might have a more of a complaint to stand on there, but then again, Android Market offers it to dload for free.

In reality for Google to make Android overcome the iPhone, it's got to get a handle on the Android Market and access to it.

If you have access to the poster's emails, grab mine and drop me a line if you do get that G10, I'm curious how it compares to the GT. Also, there are a couple of other tablets coming out Midnite by Nationide ( repackaged WITS A81-E ) based on the Cortex A8 core @ 600Mhz which which also claim access to the Android Market that are getting A LOT of attention in the Gadget/Developer circles.

All in all, I'm excited, but seriously, I think Google has to get it's act together here as well.

You're right–Google needs to get its act together. The Augen series of events has turned into a soap opera that rivals the departure of Hurt from HP (well not really :-) ).

My gut is telling me that the G10 will arrive without a functioning marketplace as well.
