Jaybird have released their update to their very successful Sportsband Bluetooth Headphones range with the release of the Sportsband 2. Monday to Friday I spend about 45 mins travelling to work one way, this includes a 5 min walk to the train station, 30 min train ride and a 10 min walk to work from the train station so most days I like to listen to music on my walks and watch a movie on the train, now I used to use cabled headsets like Jaybirds Tiger Eyes, SkullCandy, HTC and even Apple headphones, they all have one thing in common the cable. Some are great like the Tiger Eyes and SkullCandy and pump out some pure sound and some just don’t cut it – they don’t stay on or the audio sounds flat. So I was delighted to have a go at the Sportsband 2 Headphones, it eliminates the cable saga.
I received my Midnight Black Sportsband 2 Headphones just over two weeks ago and boy do I enjoy using them, if the very large headphones put you off as you may think they make you look like Princess Leia, well the Sportsband 2 will make you forget the ear warmer look, but keep that 80’s style, as they look great and sound even better. Here is what some of my work mates thought of the headphones when I first got them…
“Wow! What sound”
“You’re kidding, the bass is awesome!”
“Where can I get them!”
“Gee, that’s sweet!”
“I hear more with these!”
“Can I keep them?“
Since I have been using the Sportsband 2, I don’t think I will be going back to using a standard cabled headset, the Sportsband 2 is so comfortable and easy to use, it blocks out the surrounding hustle and bustle of the world around me with a comforting layer of sound that I have control over with the menu buttons in easy reach on the headset, I can listen to music HOW it should be and HEAR the music the way it should be.
In this review you will find technical information and photo’s curtsey of www.jaybirdgear.com and my own personal insights to this awesome headphone. Were to start, the sound, what is it like, how does it sound, does it sound better that other headphones cabled. I tested the Sportsband in a huge range of places with both the Audio for music, movies and talking on my phone, with all tests I was using my HTC HD2.
THE TESTS
At Home
Now I have three kids ages 9, 7 & 2 1/2 they are very loud and it is some time very hard to hear your self think let alone listen to music as I write my reviews, surf the net for techno news and or chat to family via Skype. It is a know fact that a 3 year old can drown out a room of 200 people so I thought it would be a pretty good test to see how the Sportsband 2 stacked up.
1) Background Noise – Pass
The headphones worked a dream, I could still listen to my music or watch my movie and not be drowned out by my little darlings playing (fighting).
2) Audio / Call Quality – Pass
Now with any audio, in my my books the sound is only as good as the format & level of recording, however with the Sportsband 2 I was pretty impress that some of my questionable tracks stood up to the challenge.
3) Comfort – Pass
I normally can spend up to 1 – 3 hours on the computer at night and like to listen to a few albums, I tested the headset for just on an hour 45 and didn’t feel any discomfort as I sometimes did with the ear bud type headsets.
4) Functionality – Pass
With the ability to adjust the volume level, next track, pause, play all at a touch of a button on the headset is a dream, no longer having to grab my phone to change the volume.
On the Train
As I stated before I Travel to work every day on the train, as some will know that can be very noise from the sound of the train itself to the hustle and bustle of the commuters, the Sportsband 2 is ideally suited for this type of environment.
1) Background Noise – Pass
With the adjustment of the volume all from the Headphones I can block out the crying baby 5 rows down, stop hearing the latest gossip about Silvia 2 rows up. Like sitting in my own cacoon of audio warmth.
2) Audio/ Call Quality – Pass
Just like at home the quality was top notch, just listen to the bass and movement of the song just made want to listen to more. I normally call my Wife half way home to let her know I am 15 minutes out from station, she has no problems hearing me and I don’t even have to raise my voice.
3) Comfort – Pass
A 30 Minute train ride and half a movie, and about 15 minute walk and my ears don’t hurt when I get to work.
4) Functionality – Pass
Again with the use of the menu on the headphones I no longer feel like I am going to knock the person next to me changing the volume.
At Work
I work for a Mobile Repair Service for an Australian Telco and it is a very busy place, phones ringing, noise every where.
1) Background Noise – Pass
When I first got the headset I was watching a movie in my lunch break the sound was at a medium setting, however it took a work mate to wave their hand in front of me to get my attention, so great if you want to drowning out your work mates that want to bug you in your lunch break.
2) Audio / Call Quality – Pass
Listen to movies is like I am at home listening to the 5.1 surround sound, it makes my HD2 feel like the movies. Call quality was again great when walking through the CBD, no need to raise my voice so that I could be heard.
Windy Day
I was walking home from the train station on a very windy day, the wind was whistling through the tress, air felt heavy with the wind buffeting me.
1) Background Noise – Pass
My wife was very surprised when I called her and she couldn’t hear any background noise, as she could hear the wind knocking about out side.
2) Audio / Call Quality – Pass
The call quality was great, I could hear my Wife over the wind with no problems and she could hear everything I said.
So at the end of the tests I was totally taken with the Sportsband 2 Headphones, they just meet every need I had in a headset, even the battery life was great I got about 5 days worth of play back with say about an hour and 1/2 to 2 hours of use per day was pretty good, charging was easy with the provided USB Cable.
The cost of the Sportsband 2 is well within the price range about $113AUD ($99USD), I would recommend the Sportsband 2 to everyone from who likes to jog, or going to the gym or just relaxing at home listening to your favourite albums.

Which music devices come with apt-X? Apple’s new Mac Mini is the first to carry apt-X and therefore, does not require a JayBird Bluetooth adapter to play in apt-X quality to the Sportsband Bluetooth headphones. apt-X is built right into both devices so Sportsband will switch to apt-X mode automatically. There are plenty more phones and other devices to carry apt-X in the coming months. |
