Nokia Shows No Class, No Class At All

nokiaThis is really sad, since I was actually beginning to think my dismissal of the new Nokia lineup was a bit hasty. The new screen technology seems to be really nice, and there is no denying the N8 and E7 are slick looking phones (if horribly named), even if the software is showing its age. I also enjoyed the tasteful shows of attitude the Nokia execs have been showing at Nokia World, saying they refused to apologize for not being Apple. It was as if Nokia was signaling they were comfortable as the elder statesman of the mobile world, and were ready to focus on the things they were good at, despite calls to do otherwise.

Then things go bad. Admittedly, Nokia World in London was booked well in advance and the HTC event was just scheduled a few weeks ago, so Nokia may be feeling a bit shirty about it. However, dig the calendar Nokia, just about EVERY tech vendor is having an event or announcement over the next couple weeks. There are BOUND to be some conflicts. Take the high road, choose tolerance, be gracious, show WHY Nokia is viewed as such a mature, stable company, yadda yadda.

Instead, they decided to go pure bush league.

It was enough they stationed young paid shils outside the site of the HTC event holding red balloons reading “I know where I’m going with Nokia’s Ovi Maps”. That was like Microsoft’s recent “funeral”…playful, a little funny, and not likely to be taken seriously…I mean, who takes anything connected to Ovi seriously anyway?

However, knowing that much of the tech press corps covering Nokia World were likely to nip out, catch HTC’s show, have lunch from the sandwich case in Sainsbury’s while watching the beautiful people in Hyde Park or Trafalgar Square and then come back to Nokia World..they passed out the following HTC Press Conference Survival Kit:

nokia-htc-survival-guide

Just sad Nokia, and it looks very very desperate. It is also somewhat ironic since most of the press have been commenting that whatever you think of the phones, Nokia World has been dull and long winded thus far with no surprises. Now we know it lacks class as well as surprises.

Way to completely ignore the fact that HTC sent buses with their logos to Nokia World to pick up these people.

I hadn't seen that reported, however it sounds totally plausible. I wonder, did the HTC buses bring the press BACK to Nokia World as well?

However, I don't think it is exactly the same as what Nokia did. The kids with balloons maybe, but not the survival kit. Besides which, the survival kits had to be prepared in advance, so they couldn't have been a response to HTC sending buses to ferry the press to the event.

Did they really give people a free sandwich? Yummy.

I don't know, it sounds kind of humorous to me and not as morbid as the Microsoft funeral (although that was presumably not meant for the public).

However, if you are going to call another vendor dull, you had better bring the excitement.

Oh ya and HTC showed class by ferrying people from Nokia world..??? What a biased reporting..

I think its awesome, HTC provoked Nokia and Nokia celebrated HTC's intrusion with a innovative, creative PR party – red ballooons and HTC lunch (Ham Tomato Cheese)….i love this Nokia!

    Cheers Nokia!

Yes, I agree with your observations. It seems like the MS/BS is already stuck its fatfoot in the door with its crass and below the waist comments… transforming what was one NOKIA to a modernized vulgar niKiniKia… when their phones will be as vulgar, thier client base will shrivel and their brand name will be lost…

Did you read the comments, Kannanraji? Zealot said that he hadn't heard about that when he wrote the piece. It's not biased if you don't know about something.
