Since I bought my iPad, I have been using my Speck CandyShell Batwing Black case and loving it. However, you can never have too many cases so Speck sent me their DustJacket Black portfolio-style case to have a look at. I wanted to try a case that gave further protection to the screen when I am travelling to work on the train and also gave me some further stability when holding it or having it on my lap.

Here is a quick blurb from Speck’s website.

Quick Overview
Big screens. Big protection. Big style. The Speck DustJacket is a portfolio-style case for iPad with a protective screen cover that opens like a book and folds back making it comfortable to hold. It comes complete with a built-in, flip-out reading stand with multiple pre-set standing angles for viewing and working. The micro-fleece lined interior with custom cradle will securely hold your iPad, while the exterior adds high style.

When I look at a case the main things I look for are Style, Protection and Functionality. Here are my thoughts and views on this case… All photos taken with my Dell streak…

STYLE

Speck have done it again with a very stylish case for the iPad that is very practical, yet shows a gentle look and feel. My first impressions were that the case did feel large, but this I think was more of a comparison to the CandyShell case. With the added bulk, the case did feel pretty sturdy to say the least.

PROTECTION

The Duskjacket case in my view gives excellent protection on a number of fronts, with the iPad sitting in a plastic holder and then surrounded with a soft Leatherette style case gives both protection to the iPad’s body and screen. The front cover has a nice thickness to it and when you add the soft micro-fleece lined interior you have great protection for the screen.

DUSTJACKET & iPAD
Inserting the case in the plastic base is pretty straight forward, once it is in you have access to all your buttons – Volume, Power and charger port.

The front cover feels soft and has a hinge that enables it to fold back to give a raised reading stand…

The case opens up to show the plastic holder, the grooves are for reading stand…

Plastic holder lifts up, you can also see the tab sticking out in the middle on the left of the plastic case, this slots into the groves of the reading stand…

The iPad clips in securely into the plastic holder.

Plastic holder feels very firm, you clearly hear a nice snap noise when you fully clip in the iPad…

Once the iPad is in it looks great…

FUNCTIONILITY
The case works very well when put in landscape mode; both setups can be used to surf the internet or watch movies…

OVERVIEW
During the past two weeks, my wife and I found the DustJacket case to be ideal for use when watching TV or using it on the train. My wife really liked this case, and when using my iPad, she would change it from the CandyShell Case to the DustJacket. It felt secure and, unlike the CandyShell, the screen was protected. With 3 kids roaming our house, this is a must.

As with any case from Speck, the quality and workmanship are excellent and the overall thought and design have been implemented to give the user full range of motion and comfortable use of the iPad in a varied range of positions.

RATING
My Wife Lisa gives the Speck Duskjacket Black Case 9/10 iPad’s. In her view nothing is perfect, but for Lisa this is close.

I gave the Speck DustJacket Black Case 8.5/10 iPad’s, for me I loved the solid base, however overall it did have a bit of bulk to it.
