IMG_20110516_083328For most of us we are always worry about our battery use for our smartphones, it’s one of the main faults bought to us at the Service Centre. Especially those going from a standard handset like a Nokia 2730 to an android phone like the HTC Legend or Desire HD, huge jump in ability and resources. "My Battery only last 6-12 hours, when it should last 2-3 days!?".

How can we combat the dreaded battery drain – for Noobs (new people) it can be just education as they may have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS on an not know it, or that they are syncing Facebook, Gmail and other applications every 15 mins. But for most power users the standard battery can range from 1300mAh to 1530mAh in capacity and it just wont meet our full needs.

For most power users we have a charger at home, a charger in the car (if you drive to work) and another one at work, it’s just a given we need to do this. With most new devices coming out with 1GHz processors (and some now with Tegra 1.2GHz processors, and talk there may be 1.5-1.8GHz coming out) and larger screens 4.3" or even 5" on my Dell Streak, these all put our standard batteries under a bit of pressure, then add normal use to that equation at most we will only get 6-8 hours before they need to charge our devices.

Another option is to look at Extended batteries, the standard battery that came with my Dell Streak is only 1530 mAh now with say an 1800 mAh battery that little bit extra juice can make a huge difference to your day.

Recently I spoke to a contact a Mugen Power Batteries one of the leading smartphone extended battery retailers in the world, who sent me out an 1800 mAh battery and also the MEGA 4800 mAh battery (which I will be reviewing later).

BATTERY DRAIN

IMG_20110516_083407Have you ever gone to work and forgotten your charger? And wondered if your smartphone will last the day? This happened to me a number of times, in most instances I had to be very wary of how I used the handset even to the point of having to turn off my Streak for about 2.5 hours, by doing this I was able to get over 15hours, from 5:55am to 9:35pm which left me with 12% battery. In reality I really only got about 12-13 hours as I had to turn it off. Some may say that was pretty good but I would say that it should be more.

When I tested the 1800 mAh battery the first day it was similar to the standard battery use, drained pretty fast, however after it was discharged and then charged over night for a second time, I started to see some good responses.

My Average day starts at about 6am and I have my Streak on with Wi-Fi checking emails, market for updates and the like, at about 7:20 I leave for work and turn Wi-Fi off and 3G Data on, 30 min train ride to Perth where I might be reading an eBook, watching a movie or surfing on the net. Once at work I use my Streak for Exchange email, checking details on our Repair Management System (Web based system) taking photo’s of parts and emailing them, calls & SMS’s and at lunch time read or watch a movie for an hour. After work another 30 train ride home and again reading or maybe a movie etc. So pretty busy day, most of the time I will normally charge my Streak at about 4pm for an hour & a half so that I know I have enough battery left to enjoy the trip home.

1Twitter: 10+ batches per day with 20-200 tweets per batch

2Emails: Both Gmail and Exchange are pushed so can vary from 10-20 emails daily

3Market: I normally check this on a daily bases (almost every couple of hours lol) either checking for updates or seeing what’s new, most of time there is an update average size is 4MB.

4DropBox: I am a big user of DropBox uploading files and stuff to transfer from my Notebook, iPad and Dell Streak.

THE OUTCOME
So with all the above data, I was waiting to see how the 1800 mAh battery would handle it all. I was expecting it to take a few dischargers and rechargers, but on the second full charge I was able to get just over 16 hours and I didn’t have to turn off of the Streak like I had to do with the standard battery, great knowing I have that bit more in the tank to get home and still read or watch movies on the train.

After just under 6 hours of use I was at 64% with the 1800mAh battery so going pretty good. Still going after 13 hours with 23% still in the tank, so can make a full day at the office and also wi-fi at home. Almost there, 7% left with just over 16 hours of use, pretty good day, with above average use.

This was pretty good so from 5:55am to around 10pm before the battery died. The time frame is well with in what I was hoping for and in the end exceed my expectations and should get better with regular charging (Conditioning).

If the standard battery is not quite making it to the close of business for you, then I would highly recommend getting the Mugen 1800 mAh extended battery, for me it is a peace of mind knowing I have that little bit extra in the tank to get me home and know that I will receive or can make that important call or send that email.

The cost of the Battery is $39.95, for more info on how you can purchase your extended battery visit www.mugen.com.
