YouTube Mobile hits

Posted by Tyler on Aug 13, 2008 | Comments

After a long wait period, YouTube Mobile is finally here!  Plus it’s made for mobile browsers that don’t have Flash support, meaning it works with the AT&T Tilt (provided you have HTC Streaming Media Installed). Overall playback is seamless.  Click on the watch video link and HTC Streaming Media automatically starts (worked from Pocket IE and Opera Mobile) and starts playing the video. Needless...

A new mobile browser: Iris Browser

Posted by Tyler on Aug 12, 2008 | Comments

So quite a few mobile browsers are now in the running.  Opera Mini, Opera Mobile, Skyfire, MiniMo, and Pocket IE.  Well now a new browser is coming into the running, by the name of Iris. Iris is currently in a technical preview but is free for non-commercial use, and hopefully will stay that way.  However, I’ve used quite a few mobile browsers and Iris is already working it’s way into my favorite of the...

HTC Android phone still on track (says HTC)

Posted by Tyler on Aug 09, 2008 | Comments

According to HTC, their Google Android based phone is still on track for release at the end of this year, despite an analyst stating that according to their sources, HTC is not having a good time developing the device. However, HTC has come out and said that their Android phone will be available by the end of 2008, making HTC the first to the market with an Android based device. mDesktop contest over

Posted by Tyler on Aug 08, 2008 | Comments

The MotionApps mDesktop contest is over.  The winners have been emailed and have 72 hours to get back in contact with me.  Be sure to check your emails guys to see if you’re one of the winners. Furthermore, MotionApps will be handing out keys to other entries that they liked, so just because you don’t get an email doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t win. Congratulations to our winners...

Future of the web, a little sooner than we think

Posted by Tyler on Aug 08, 2008 | Comments

Ok so Adaptive Path’s Aurora concept is very cool Aurora (Part 2) from Adaptive Path on Vimeo. But even so with this cool concept, I can’t help but keep thinking back to Windows Live Search for Windows Mobile.  Windows Mobile is a platform people have really been neglecting and it’s really a highly advanced, and easy to use, mobile OS, which I happen to greatly prefer to the iPhone OS. ...

Mobile Anti-virus, a call for opinion

Posted by Tyler on Aug 07, 2008 | Comments

That’s right, I’m asking your opinion. What do you think internet?  Mobile Anti-virus, is it worth it?  If so, what do you use? With all the applications out there and even more on the way, the amount, and sophistication, of viruses for Windows Mobile are bound to increase.  What do you guys think? Remember this is for fun, so no flaming each other. AKPC_IDS += "20659,"; Read More →

mDesktop 1.1 officially out, win a copy! (contest time)

Posted by Tyler on Aug 06, 2008 | Comments

So some of you probably remember when I did an article on Motion Apps’ mDesktop program, that was really overall positive but had a few complaints to the bugs in the program.  Well now I’m happy to announce that mDesktop version 1.1 is officially out, with a new revamped GUI, and new increased functionality, and you betcha, a whole lot less bugs.  I had the opportunity to use this software first hand and...

Last.FM audio streaming

Posted by Tyler on Aug 05, 2008 | Comments

Some of you (myself included) are probably highly disappointed with the fact that Pandora does not have a Windows Mobile client.  They have clients for AT&T dumbphones and the iPhone but nothing for Windows Mobile.  In prior correspondence with Pandora, they’ve kind of hinted that they’re not really interested in creating a Windows Mobile client, at least at this time. What some of us haven’t...

The cell phone buzz

Posted by Tyler on Aug 03, 2008 | Comments

You know that buzz you get on your PC speakers or wired headset, or otherwise whenever you set your cell phone near it?  Yeah I think we all do.  Well fortunately it’s quite easy to fix, especially for those of you who know about electro-magnetic interference, this fix will come as no surprise.  But first a little background. The reason this phenomena occurs is because your cell phone (in particular...

Trip down Nokia lane

Posted by Tyler on Jul 31, 2008 | Comments

Don’t get me wrong, I happen to be a big fan of Nokia smartphones, this article is not meant to bash Nokia smartphones in the slightest. I took a short trip down Nokia lane a couple days ago in pondering purchasing an N95.  As some of you already know, I already have an AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) which is a very powerful device that I’m very happy with. However, something with the UNIX-ness of Symbian made...

What about bricking? (or what exactly bricks a device)

Posted by Tyler on Jul 30, 2008 | Comments

So you’ve probably heard about being careful with flashing and such because it can brick your device.  And you obviously know that bricking a device renders it unusable.  But what exactly causes this brick? Enter the world of embedded devices.  Needless to say, your Tilt (herein called an embedded device) lacks a hard drive, so it needs some sort of involatile memory (id est, memory that does not...

Drivers, now with “full-screen” support

Posted by Tyler on Jul 29, 2008 | Comments

Since the initial release of the drivers, there has already been one update and now I’m proud to present a second update, already.  This new version features a hack that emulates full-screen mode thus allowing full-screen 3D applications (but it’s emulated so expect bugs).  This is pretty much the only change in the drivers. Also, there now is a project to port TouchFlo 3D to the Tilt (entitled Manilla),...

Drivers: Moving forward

Posted by Tyler on Jul 23, 2008 | Comments

The drivers for the Tilt already have received their first update since the initial launch. The updated version has a few changes, and I’ve had to do some searching to find out exactly what.  Apparently the change has to do with the inner workings of the driver itself.  The new version does this in a safer way allowing better compatibility. Despite the update however, TiltSite still does not recommend that you...

Water-proof devices, changing the rules?

Posted by Tyler on Jul 22, 2008 | Comments

Water + expensive electronics is always bad news right?  As some of you may remember when Phil’s Z9 bit the dust a few weeks back.  This however will blow your mind.  Check this out. Just mind boggling.  Want a good waterproof case?  Well for $50-75 you soon may have it.  That’s a pretty reasonable price in my mind for taking quite a few electronics no-no’s off of my list.  Plus not to mention...

MotionApps mDesktop: One cool piece of software

Posted by Tyler on Jul 21, 2008 | Comments

If you’re like me then you have a cradle and also leave your Tilt in said cradle most of the time.  Finally, you remove Tilt from cradle every time you get a text message or want to install a piece of software. Well the days of doing that are finally over.  Now we can leave the Tilt in it’s cradle and control the unit from our PCs (not to mention, text message with unprecedented speed and ease). ...

What the drivers are, what they are not, and your sentiments

Posted by Tyler on Jul 19, 2008 | Comments

74:68:69:73:20:69:73:20:68:65:78 Understand that?  Didn’t think so.  Basically what the above statement just says “this is hex” in a format known as hex or hexadecimal.  Now this format is very useful in computers because, being a Base-16 mathematics system, it can reduce power-of-two mathematics systems such as binary (which is Base-2) into very short strings.  However, that’s another story,...

ROM with Drivers already available

Posted by Tyler on Jul 18, 2008 | Comments

It’s barely been 24 hours since the release of the Tilt drivers and already someone has a ROM with the drivers baked in. To clarify, TiltSite’s opinion about using the drivers remain the same.  Don’t use the drivers if you’re not an advanced user or developer.  You should stick with what works for right now, but I felt it noteworthy that they’re already making their way into the ROMs. Again,...

HTC Home customization

Posted by Tyler on Jul 18, 2008 | Comments

So maybe you dislike how the HTC Home plugin looks on certain ROMs, or perhaps you’d just like something else better.  Well it’s actually really easy to change.  A piece of software called HTC Home Customizer from PocketEmu Software makes it quite easy.  Best of all, it’s free! Installation is pretty much the standard deal, then you launch the program and you’ll have a screen similar...

Big start menu woes in the Diamond ROMs

Posted by Tyler on Jul 18, 2008 | Comments

Do you dislike the look of the start menu in the Diamond ROM?  Well here’s how to get it back to the original style. First, go to Start->Programs->System(tab)->TouchFlo and the option is named "Big Start menu" or something similar.  Uncheck this and do a soft reset.  Enjoy. AKPC_IDS += "20608,"; Read More →

AMD bows out of the handheld graphics arena

Posted by Tyler on Jul 17, 2008 | Comments

In a market that’s attracting more and more competitors, one is finally bowing out, AMD.  Why?  Well a $1.2 billion Q2 loss will do that to you. From Engadget: In addition to an overall $269M operating loss, the company is taking an $876M charge against the purchase of ATI so it can abandon the handheld graphics and digital TV markets. To be honest, we hadn’t been hearing much about ATI’s plans...
