REVIEW: AT&T (Samsung i637) Jack

I’m going to preface my review of the AT&T Jack with the following caveat: you will see reflections in many of the pictures. There, I said it…I feel better now. The Jack, aka Samsung i637, could be seen as the younger sibling of the Blackjack II, but with smoother lines and similar footprint, though IMHO bearing closer resemblance to the Motorola Q9 series. It sports tri-band UMTS/HSDPA and quad-band GSM capabilities, 256 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM, a 528 MHz processor and a 320×240 QVGA screen.

A “lightweight” contender?

The first thing that grabbed my attention about the handset was how light it was. Admittedly it’s a touch heavier than the BlackJack II, but I’m an AT&T Fuze owner, and the Fuze, while powerful, is by no means a light unit. But the Jack is.

VisualGPS releases BeeLineGPS v1.90

A few years ago, one of the first geocaching apps I used (successfully, I might add…) on my pocket PCs was BeeLineGPS by VisualGPS. Review: Callpod Drone Bluetooth Audio Dongle

has recently released an interesting product in the realm of bluetooth stereo audio, the Callpod Drone. Now at first casual glance, this average-sized dongle appears to be one of the many typical bluetooth adapters where you need to ensure a functional BT stack and requisite drivers and spend a fair amount of time waiting for everything to install or demand you supply a driver disk to satisfy its requirements, point to driver locations, update online and so on. Not so with this little silver and black gem!

Palm Treo 800w Review

I’ve got a little confession to make: I’m one of the unwashed masses who has never handled a Treo device before. I was tempted last year by the Treo 700wx when I was looking for a suitable upgrade path for my Motorola V3m, but decided in favor of the Samsung SCH-i760, the only Pocket PC phone with Windows Mobile 6 available from Verizon at the time. In any case, permit this neo-Treo user to share his thoughts on the new Treo 800wx Pocket PC phone via Sprint.

Thaddeus Computing to Publish iPhone Edition of Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine

For those familiar with Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine and who pined for a similar offering for their iPhone, Thaddeus Computing will soon publish a print magazine and a companion web site targeted at iPhone users. Per Thaddeus Computing CEO Hal Goldstein:

“Given the incredible interest in the new iPhone, extending our Smartphone & Pocket PC brand to cover the iPhone and iPod touch is natural for us. We’ve been doing enthusiast mobile computing publications since 1985.

“We look forward to helping users get the most out of their iPhone or iPod touch and have already identified over 100 hidden tips about using built-in software and iTunes. Each issue will cover new software, top accessories, and best Web applications. Our ‘iPhone at Work’ section will assist both professionals and large organizations.”

The premier issue of the iPhone Edition of Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine will be available mid-August on newsstands worldwide, followed by three more iPhone editions in 2009.

Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Seeks Your Input

I feel very honored this year to join the ranks of our very own Julie and warthog, who are both current and prior Board of Expert Judges for Smartphone & Pocket PC Software Awards. This will be a busy summer for us as we sift through loads of excellent software in our respective categories and recognize those companies producing superior software. We’d like your help, though. The Nominations Manager, Werner Ruotsalainen, better known to many as Menneisyys, has along with many of the Board of Experts created the nominations list. This tentative list of nominations of Windows Mobile software is now available for public viewing and commentary.

This is where we’d appreciate your input, from end users and developers alike. By following this link, you can make suggestions to improve the quality of the pool of items to be judged. I’ve got a couple of gently-used dragon-titled devices, namely Callpod Dragon Bluetooth headsets that I’m going to give away to two lucky (and hopefully funny) winners. How to win?

PDAmill RATS!! Game Contest

It’s the last day in April, and it’s been a cold, miserable last couple of days in my neck of the woods, so I thought, "Why not brighten things up with a contest?" So, here we are with a contest! Our friends at PDAmill, skilled in the craft of fine mobile games, have been kind enough to provide me with 5 copies of their excellent platform game, RATS!!. I reviewed this game a while back, and it was a blast to play. My oldest boy kept asking to watch me play it on my X51v, so it’s been a family favorite. It was also a Finalist in the Smartphone and Pocket PC Awards for Best Platform Game of 2007, too!

Want to take a shot a winning one for yourself? Here’s all you need to do. Did you notice something odd on Morty’s (that’s the rat above) backpack generator? It’s biohazard symbol.
