For the last year or so I have had a Motorola Moto-Q 9c Smartphone (Verizon). For a Windows Mobile Standard device, a darn good phone. It did take me 3 of them at the beginning to get one that didn’t have a sticky key or something but that’s another story. Once I got past that initial problem the phone seemed to work fine.

Just recently, the “Q” developed a bit of a sticky key on the main keypad. Nothing serious – it still worked but it was enough to be annoying when I was writing a text message. So I dropped in at Verizon and discovered that my account was eligible for my annual equipment upgrade. So … I chose to get an HTC Ozone to replace it.

I’m a Vista user now myself but saying I upgraded it out of need is a stretch. Vista is fine (and Windows 7 shows promise) but MS had no idea how deeply entrenched XP was going to become.

The O/S upgrade cycle will go on – but those of you still happily running XP don’t rush out to buy either of the new O/S offerings until you’re darn good and ready. A more compatible and solid piece of software has never been written and just ain’t going to die any time soon.

Saturday was the day for fans of the Palm Pre – Palm’s hot up-and-coming SmartPhone. One of the guys I work with has been really anticipating getting his – his computer has has screen-saver pictures of the device for weeks!

The reviews of the device seem to be mixed. The new “Web O/S” is said to be pretty impressive. The device itself is supposed to be pretty nice as well though maybe a little lightweight for business users. Time will tell.

The launch yesterday morning was seen as not being quite as hyped up as the launch of the Apple iPhone but from what I’ve read there was a shortage of devices at the outset.

Anyway … it’s here. I’m looking forward to seeing the one my coworker brings to the office tomorrow. He was probably camping on Friday night!

I always wondered this myself. I had certain ideas like maybe 160 out of 255 characters in an Ethernet Packet or some other method of squeezing the data in. Turns out that my thoughts on that were not all that far-fetched…

Looking for a data pipeline that would fit these micro messages, Hillebrand came up with the idea to harness a secondary radio channel that already existed on mobile networks. This smaller data lane had been used only to alert a cell phone about reception strength and to supply it with bits of information regarding incoming calls. Voice communication itself had taken place via a separate signal.

The owner of an obscure Illinois software development company is suing Google and everyone else in the Open Handset Alliance over their use of the word “Android.”

The suit has made public the fact that Google’s own attempts to trademark the word have been rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), largely because the software developer, Eric Specht, had been granted a PTO trademark for his company’s name, Android Data.

The Future Branch Office: Download now

Specht filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday, seeking an injunction on Android-branded products, which would include T-Mobile’s G1 smartphone, and $94 million in damages for trademark infringement. Besides Google, the Alliance includes a set of blue chip technology firms such as Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, China Mobile, Samsung and Vodafone.

So it would seem, according to this article published in Redmond Magazine.

Obviously Version 8 would be several years away but sometimes this gets crazy. For some reason I thought I read somewhere else that Windows 7 was going to be the last major release for awhile. Guess not!

One thing’s for sure; there’s not going to be any lack of work for this Olde Country Windows programmer for a long time! Click on the Logo below to read more about it.

I guess I never thought about this. Apparently there are companies now sending out SPAM through the text-messaging systems of Mobile Phones. Obviously SPAM is a big problem with e-mail (I get lots of that on the Moto-Q) but text-messaging systems are often fee-based if you aren’t subscribed to a bulk plan of some kind. I’d definitely take a dim view of some company sending me a text-message that I had to pay for!

Last week I was asked to take a look at a new application for Smartphone’s called ‘Pocket Express’. Briefly – the application is a free on-demand newsfeed. Over the years (and when I say years I mean years) I’ve looked at various news programs. I no longer remember the names of any of them (isn’t that funny?) Programs of this sort began to appear even before Windows was popular. Anyone remember PUSH content? After awhile I stopped looking at these things because they just didn’t seem to measure up or were a hassle to use.

One of the reasons the newsfeed concept was problematic back in those days was because we simply didn’t have the "always-on" capability that the Internet now provides. The systems back then depended on a dial-up connection which made it difficult to provide anything approaching real-time. Well, with a current-day smartphone and decent data plan the age of up-to-date newsfeed in your pocket is here.

If you’re a budding developer you might consider SmartPhone development. According to this article there’s an awful lot going on in that workspace. Being a Windows developer myself I’m biased toward Windows Mobile but if that’s not your cup of tea there’s a number of platforms looking for developer talent.

Lest you think that development for these devices is easy, you would be wrong. However, as is often the case, Microsoft’s development platform is the most refined and offers the most options.

Looks like the economy might not be the only thing slowing down these days. Supposedly, Microsoft has gotten busy with other things because from what this article says about Steve Ballmer’s keynote there ain’t all that much new about WM right now – at least until 2010 or so. Seems that Apple and Palm are giving them a run for their money right now.

Last month’s numbers from Gartner were not encouraging for Microsoft. Apple with its iPhone, and Research in Motion with a new cadre of Blackberries, clearly have the momentum on their side. For example, the market share of Windows Mobile for the third quarter dropped from 12.8 percent to 11.1 percent while RIM’s share jumped from 9.7 percent to 15.9 percent. For the first time, iPhone sales out sold those of Windows Mobile, Gartner noted.

I guess Microsoft will just have to get busy won’t they? You can read the rest of this article on Redmond Developer News here.

The new “Moto W233″

I wouldn’t classify these things as particularly cool or “sexy” but the idea of recycling the plastic to make phones is pretty cool. At least Moto will save the bottles from being targets of my new Ruger! (Another story) :-)
