This is a great opportunity to call your friends and relatives on Thanksgiving if you do’nt have nationwide dialing. Truphone just announced that for 12 hours on Thanksgiving 2009 all calls made on Truphone to mobile and landline phones in the United States will be free so that friends and family can call each other to catch up this holiday season.

From noon to midnight UTC, or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST, on Thursday, Nov. 26, all calls made to U.S. landlines and mobiles using the Truphone application will be free from anywhere in the world. More information is available here: www.truphone.com/thanksgiving.

“Thanksgiving is a day when family and friends come together to celebrate and catch up across the U.S.”, said Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone. “For those people who can’t get home for the holidays, often because distance is too much, a telephone call to let them know how they are is the next best thing. With this initiative, we are allowing people who can’t be together to catch up on this special day”.

I’ve been using SoftMaker Office for years and have found it to be a “must have” program on my devices especially if you do a lot of writing and want (or need) the ability to use all of the formatting that is available in Word and not available in the mobile version.

This is just a quick reminder that Softmaker’s special sale for their office applications on Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) ends two days from now. They are offering TextMaker 2008, PlanMaker 2008, and SoftMaker Presentations 2008 for Windows Mobile for $9.99 each.

If you haven’t yet used Softmaker Office on your Windows Mobile device, then you may want to consider it … it has been an invaluable tool for me and now because of their price, it certainly is something you should consider. I am convinced that you will like it.

When ever a user asks if they can change the language, I always reply that you cannot but little did I know that there seems to be a way to do that with the Omnia. It appears as if Samsung has overcome this and is offering Language Packs for several languages.

Mark points out that that the new Omnia 2 already has all the Language Packs in ROM. You can change your language to: French, Italian, German, Russian, Norwegian, Dutch, Czech, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Finnish, Danish, Polish and Swedish. I sure hope this becomes a standard for all devices!

BRINGING NEW FUNCTIONALITY TO THE BLUETOOTH CATEGORY

Sound ID will be offering a NEW bluetooth headset that will have PersonalSound custom hearing modes to boost your listening power and Environmental Mode to amplify sound between calls. In addition, it will be compatible with the new Sound ID CompanionLink Remote Microphone.

There are three unique features worth noting:
1) PersonalSound, which consists of three listening modes tuned to the most common hearing preferences to further enhance speech clarity without raising the volume. This feature is only found on Sound ID products – no other Bluetooth headsets offer this capability.
2) The Sound ID 400 is the only headset to deliver Environmental Mode, a feature that enables users to hear equally out of both ears in-between calls. When the Environmental Mode is activated, the hearing ability is enhanced and soft sounds can be heard while wearing the headset – allowing clear conversations “On” and “Off” the phone.
3) Additionally, the headset is the only one of its kind to be compatible with the optional Sound ID CompanionLink Remote Microphone – creating a Personal Sound System. The CompanionLink is a small clip-on device, a mere two-inches in size, that syncs with the Sound ID 400 and can be worn by a conversation partner or placed near a sound source to pick up audio at its origin for a richer sound experience. This device can greatly enhance the clarity of speech in many communication situations, such as: (1) a distant talker, e.g. a lecturer; (2) a very noisy environment, e.g. a restaurant; or, (3) a talker whose speech is received as faint due to his or her physical location with respect to the listener, e.g. a passenger sitting in the back of the car.

The Sound ID 400 also offers NoiseNavigation, which uses multiple microphones and special DSP algorithms to remove background noise and elevate speech. The goal is to improve speech understanding in noisy situations. Finally, Sound ID 400 can connect with two devices simultaneously – enabling users to answer calls from two phones from the convenience of one headset. It is designed with a Black Velvet soft-touch finish.

The other day I posted a piece on Application Lock … What is it? and today we have a followup. We need to look at how to remove it from our devices so that we can install any application and make more customizations to our devices. In fact, for most of us it is a process that might be confusing but Mike Temporale from Mobile Jaw has come to the rescue. Mike has gone ahead and built an agent that will automatically disable Application Lock on Windows Mobile Standard devices during the agent install.

Simply download MobileJaw-ClearSecurity-MobiControl and run it on your device. After the install is complete, open the Start menu / Settings / Remove Programs and be sure to uninstall SOTI MobiControl from your device. If you leave this agent on your device it will have an inverse effect on your battery life as the agent will continually try and connect back to the device management server. I used a non-routable internal IP Address (192.168.1.128). So there’s no worry about it actually connecting back to some backend server and uploading all your data.

There’s more differences between Windows Mobile Standard and Professional than the touch capability of the screen. Application security is one of the major differences. When you install software on Professional based devices, the most you are asked is if you trust this unsigned application. If you say yes, then that application has full access to the device and any API’s that it would like to interact with. That’s not the case with Windows Mobile Standard based devices.

… we will finally get to see and enjoy the latest Windows Mobile devices and I expect we will be quite happy with the options available to us.

The following was from the Windows Mobile Blog

In just five weeks, you’ll have a bunch of new Windows phones to choose from. But before we show you some of the cool, new phones that will be coming out, I want to explain how we’re trying to make phones even better with Windows.

When we started work on Windows phones, we met with people all over the world who were likely to buy a smartphone and talked with them about what’s important to them in their phone. Looking at the U.S. market, for example, we found that about 15 million people in the next year will buy a new smartphone.

Of the people we talked to, 74% listed productivity as the top feature they value in their smartphone. We took this feedback to heart, making the user interface more touch friendly and improving notifications and updates from e-mail, text and calendar items. We also included the latest Internet Explorer Mobile browser and added free services like My Phone to help protect data in the event of a lost phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile for access to a wide variety of applications for direct download.
