Our toilets here are the auto flush type, it hit the water as the bowl was filling back up (thank goodness) and as I reached in to grab it, I caused the toilet to flush a second time.

It’s one of those high pressure flush toilets, the ones that go KAWOOOOOSH when you flush them and it sprayed water directly into the phone. I guess this is one case that the size of the tilt came in handy, it didn’t go down the drain.

I pulled it out, the screen was still on, and everything looked normal. I quickly pulled the phone out of the case, water was pouring out of it, and I slid the back off and pulled the battery out of the phone.

I’ve always read that you want to get the power source removed ASAP from the device because it will burn out if there are certain shorts made from the water.

This week I figured I would write up a post on how to make some custom ringtones from youtube videos for your WinMo device.

Truth be told, this can be used for any phone that can play a standard MP3 as a ringtone (read: pretty much any standard cell phone except for the iPhone), but I figured since this works well on the Tilt, this is something that people ask me about on occasion, and I needed something to write about, I would fire this article up.

First off I’m going to assume a few things first to make this simple. I am going to assume that you know how to change the sound notifications on your device. I’m not going to go into that. I am also going to assume that you know a bit about using the internet (after all, you found this site). I also don’t want to get into a discussion about copyright or anything like that. I am not suggesting you pirate anything, and I take no responsibility for your actions. If the Feds come a knockin’, don’t tell them that I said it was O.K.

Alright, lets get started. (after the break)

I’ve been asked a number of questions about the things missing in the “Clean” ROM install, and I figured I have a few minutes right now, so I will write up a quick post.

For those of you new to the discussion, I made a post talking documenting some of the differences between the clean and bloat rom installs of the latest Tilt firmware upgrade, you can read it HERE.

First, the most frequent question I have been asked or problem that was reported was people having problems actually interrupting the ATT software install, so I figured I would first detail this, step by step.

Flash the ROM (just follow the instructions on the DL page, it’s easy)

Align the screen

Go through the tutorial on copy/paste or skip it.

Create a password or skip it.

This is where it’s tricky… the INSTANT the home screen shows up, you MUST SOFT RESET THE DEVICE before the countdown starts. If the countdown has started, you’re too late, it must happen BEFORE the countdown. This is different then previous ROMS.

If you miss the chance, just soft reset before the countdown finishes, the device will come back up and start all over. you get another chance to get it right.

For those of you that don’t know what a “soft reset” is, that’s when you take the stylus and jam it in the little hole next to the USB connector on the bottom end of the device.. I’ll leave you on your own to make jokes about cramming styluses into holes, you know who you are… Pervs.

Anyway, another question, which I think is a pretty good one is… Do I lose things like threaded SMS and the voice commander software? The short answer is, No, you don’t lose those features. Basically, you will get everything that is listed on the HTC site for the ROM update, those are integrated into the ROM and are already installed into the ROM upgrade. Think of it this way, when doing the install, the default ROM install is like a clean install of XP, you’re getting the default apps that come with it (in XP’s case, things like notepad, paint, etc.), the ‘bloat’ install is like what you would get when you buy your computer from Dell or HP.. a bunch of crap that, although some might be useful, most basically just add confusion and bloat. Before I get called out, Yes, I know that that this isn’t an exact parallel, the Voice program and HTC home screen are not part of the default (from Microsoft) WinMo install (I really hope that didn’t add more confusion to the mix).

I haven’t had a lot of time to play and search, but I’m trying to find where the actual programs that the installer calls are located on the ROM, anyone have a clue on that?

Hope you find this useful, I know I didn’t address all your questions, but I thought maybe I could at least get this out there. This post is long enough as is. As you can tell, I’m not one that’s typically short winded.

As always, please let me know what you think and don’t hesitate to post replies. And again, thanks for reading!

Hello everyone. Kip Granson here, and this is my first post to TiltSite, so forgive me if this doesn’t come out quite right.

I’d like to first apologize for how vague this article is. I wanted to get this up and out fairly quickly in hopes of catching those of you who haven’t flashed yet. I will likely edit this later and add a lot more detail.

I wanted to get this post up as quickly as possible just so people can get an idea of what the difference is between a “Clean ROM” install and an install that is allowed to complete (installing the ATT Apps and such).

First off, I’d like to explain what I did and what the difference is between the two installs. If you update your Tilt with the official Official ATT Tilt ROM, you will notice, that after it is done installing (approx 10 minutes), you are prompted to align your screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, asked to set a password, and then you see the desktop, a little dialog pops up saying that it is going to install some applications, it does this for another few minutes, reboots and BAM, your Tilt has been AT&Tafied.

If you don’t want all of the AT&T customizations, you can interrupt this process by doing the following: Once you align the screen, go through the copy/paste tutorial, set (or don’t set) the password, RIGHT as the desktop shows, soft reset the device (insert the stylus into the reset button next to the USB port). It will reboot and start up with the default desktop, no AT&T customizations installed.
