Windows CE… Coming to a Projector Near You?

We’ve heard a lot of news about pico projectors recently, with AT&T’s new eXpo, projector-carrying, Windows Mobile running phone.

Windows CE is now even coming to those little projectors themselves, courtesy of Lancerlink.

Specs include Windows CE 5.0, 64MB of memory, 4GB of flash storage, an ARM CPU, USB port, and even two integrated 0.5 watt speakers, for those who happen to enjoy tiny, tinny sound. Resolution is 640×480, which is quite sufficient for many quick purposes.

This thing is pretty compact – if the price is right, it could do pretty well, in my opinion.

Available only in Japan right now, however.

Cyber Monday According to AT&T

AT&T’s got a couple of Cyber Monday deals, for just one penny. Of course, you’ll have to sign the obligatory two year contract, but still, if you’re in the market for a new phone, or your contract has recently expired, it may be a good opportunity.

On the other hand, some of you might want to wait and save that 2 year renewal for the recently discovered iPhone3,1, if it does indeed come out some time next year.

YouMail Voicemail Comes to iPhone!

YouMail is soon coming to the iPhone as a native app! If you haven’t heard of YouMail yet, it’s a service that promises to replace your voicemail on your iPhone.

Official iPhone carriers already does offer Visual Voicemail, but YouMail introduces a host of other features, including transcription (for a free), email notifications, and it’s accessible from anywhere! I use it myself to set personal greetings for calls.

Of course, the downside is that you won’t get notifications in your Phone app, but once push comes with 3.0 OS, it will hopefully be just as seamless.

It’s out now in the AppStore for free, and here are some of the features:

The free, native iPhone app allows users to do the following:

· ALWAYS know who is calling: Full caller-id information, even for mobile phone numbers that aren’t in a user’s address book

· Read voicemail: Save time by simply reading a message in just a few seconds vs taking the time to play it

· Easily forward a voicemail to anyone, right from the phone: Now your message can become some else’s problem

· Change greetings on the fly: Now callers know when the person they are calling is in a meeting, on a plane, or just out surfing

· Save voicemail forever, recover accidentally deleted messages, and even organize voicemails right from the phone

In addition, YouMail’s Visual Voicemail Plus app is connected to the full YouMail desktop service which lets users have even more control managing their voicemail in the following ways:

· Choose to pick up voicemail however and wherever it’s most convenient – your phone, your desktop PC, your outlook or web e-mail – even when there’s no data connection to your phone or it’s in the charger

· Choose who can leave you a message – automatically ditch blocked/unknown callers, telemarketers by caller id, or even callers other users have indicated are spammers

· Choose to greet every caller by name with just one click, or have special greetings for every caller that can be personalized and recorded or select from a large set of user-supplied greetings on the YouMail web site

iPhone Firmware 3.0 to bring… Speed Improvements?

So, with all that fancy jazzy features that Apple has just been stuffing into the iPhone, it’s nice to see that Apple is working on improving an integral part of the iPhone – web browsing.

Although not officially announced by Apple, Ars over there did some testing, and it shows the iPhone 3.0 MobileSafari browser to render Javascript three times faster.

What does this mean? Well, you won’t get much of a boost on those mobile version pages, but you will get a boost on desktop-formatted pages, and most of all, those snazzy Web 2.0 apps. Only time will tell just how much of an impact this will have though – iPhone currently generates a huge and by far the largest portion of all smartphones – can it widen it’s lead with this?

Golf by Zagat – Get ready to hit!

Golf season is coming up for many of you folks! Beating the buzzer comes the new Golf app by Zagat, released by Handmark. You might’ve used Zagat’s excellent restaurant app in the past, and I expect that the Golf app will be just as good, completely with location services.

The app offers reviews and ratings for each golf course – and you don’t need an active internet connection so it’ll work on your shiny new iPod Touch. Perhaps you summer golfers can use it on your brand spankin’ new (but rumored) iPhone.

This application was created to give golf enthusiasts access to Zagat’s rating and reviews wherever they are – all in the palm of their hand.

The application is compatible with the iPhone and the iPod touch since the data is locally saved and you don’t need an internet connection.

GOLF BY ZAGAT helps golfers make the best decisions based on their specific criteria. Each property is rated on Course, Facilities, Service as well as Value and Cost – which are more important than ever!

Users can browse courses based on current location (GPS enabled), region, city and state. They are also able to search by special features such as “Celebrity Designs,” “19th Holes” and “Fine Food Too.”

Users can track their best scores and save their favorites to My Courses. Each listing has click-to-call capabilities and displays useful data such as yardage and slope. The app has AccuWeather.com links to provide local course weather conditions.

Before calling FORE!, golfers can buy it now from the App Store for $4.99.

iPhone Firmware 3.0 – Ya just can’t wait for it, can ya?

It appears that some people just can’t wait for 3.0 to come out. Others can hold their horses until June. For those that can’t and want to spring for the beta version, they have to pay the $99 that Apple charges to be a registered iPhone Developer that can release apps. Or do they? Inevitably, people have cashed in on the opportunity to get some quick cash and some iPhone registered developers are selling their iPhone device slots on eBay.

So here’s how it works – each phone has an unique identifier, called the UDID. Apple allows each developer a certain number of phones they can use to “develop”, authorized by entering in the UDID on Apple’s site. By selling those slots, devs are putting in the buyer’s UDID into the site, so when the buyer goes to upgrade their phone, Apple’s servers check them out as fine.

I have no idea how Apple will react to this, and nor do I know if this is against Apple’s developer EULA or NDA since I am not a developer myself. Only time will tell.

Speed settings are an essential part of Pocket Hack Master’s successful configuration. A speed setting is a set of parameters used to fully describe a unique combination of CPU, memory, display and other peripheral clocks. Different processor families have different set of parameters.

In our example we will be configuring a device with an Intel XScale Bulverde PXA270 processor. The Speed configuration module of Pocket Hack Master is used to configure the speed settings.

Part two of the guide containing tips on specific processor configurations will be published next week.

Firefox Campus Editon Out!

Mozilla has just officially opened up its Firefox edition for students, just in time for back to school!

It includes FoxyTunes – for music, Zotero – for research and bibliographies, and StumbleUpon – to waste free time. As they say on the site, it’s the best thing to hit campuses since Ramen noodles ;-)

And of course, its completely free and opensource.

iPhone Unlocked!

Well, I’ve gotten info that the iPhone has been unlocked to work on other carriers, this time, using a SOFTWARE ONLY unlock! Complete with video proof. Well, AT&T, you have just lost your exclusive claim to the iPhone…

It’s high noon, Apple and AT&T — we really hate to break it to you, but the jig is up. Last night the impossible was made possible: right in front of our very eyes we witnessed a full SIM unlock of our iPhone with a small piece of software. It’s all over, guys.
