"Flight Mode" Does it really mean anything

Posted by Radimus on Oct 16, 2007 | Comments

Technology and convergence and ‘un-hip’ people clash.  Everyone wants to be a lawyer and few know what the laws are. Then you find there are few laws and wide interpretation and a person may actually be guilty because of (mis)interpretation A flight attendant for ATA Airlines recently asked a flier watching a movie midflight on the way to Hawaii to shut off his iPhone, not for the perfectly reasonable...

AT&T changes fee policy for customer contracts

Posted by Radimus on Oct 16, 2007 | Comments

It is about time that this happens, Early termination fees are NOT a benefit to the consumer. I would have to guess this is an effort on AT&T’s part to forestall some litigation regarding the iPhone and contract termination. The iPhones were sold at full price and required a contract that included an early termination fee. Common use of the early termination fee is to offset the discounted phone price on most...

What NOT to do with your cell phones

Posted by Radimus on Oct 09, 2007 | Comments

I’m sure that many of us have an old drawer of old cell phones and occasionally a child might find one or be given one as a toy. You might want to choose something else to allow the kids to play with. Parents might want to think twice before giving their old cell phones to their children to play with because although an old cell phone may not have a service plan, the phone can still dial 911.The wireless 911 call...

Cars That Fight Thieves

Posted by Radimus on Oct 09, 2007 | Comments

While this isn’t exactly “Mobilitysite” fodder, this is the integration of technology that will usher in new levels of convenience and security. Say some clown steals your car from the parking lot while you are hard at work. If it’s equipped with General Motors’ OnStar service, he could be in for a big surprise and you could get a little revenge – and even see your car again. Starting...

Update iPhone, get iBrick

Posted by Radimus on Sep 28, 2007 | Comments

One of the fun and unusual aspects of hacking a closed device is that it potentially makes the device unusable in the future.  All the furor in unlocking the iphone so it can be used on other networks, may wind up in making the iPhone unusable for anything. Apple came out with an iPhone software update on Thursday that patches 10 security bugs that could enable a hacker to remotely execute malicious code,...

AT&T Suspends Cell Phone Control

Posted by Radimus on Sep 26, 2007 | Comments

It was too good to be true.  Hopefully they will come up with a workaround for this valuable service.   SAN ANTONIO (AP) — AT&T Inc. has suspended a service allowing parents to put limits on when their children’s cell phones can be used because it could restrict return calls from 911 operators. AT&T’s Smart Limits service allows a child to call 911 even when restrictions are...

Two unnamed sources...

GPS Technology in Taxis – Privacy Violation?

Posted by Radimus on Aug 27, 2007 | Comments Off

There is a bruhaha in New York with the plan to use GPS to track and log taxis in the City.  Many drivers are talking about striking and others aren’t but they are all upset about it.  Their stated concerns are: The issue over a driver’s privacy is the driving issue in the debate, with a driver’s location being tracked no matter where he or she goes. “The Taxi & Limousine Commission...

NJ Teen Unlocks IPhone From AT&T Network

Posted by Radimus on Aug 24, 2007 | Comments Off

Sung to the tune of “Too much time on my hands”, a teenager on summer break has managed to unlock an iPhone from AT&T.  It is apparently not an easy fix, but for the DIY’ers… NEW YORK (AP) – A 17-year-old hacker has broken the lock that ties Apple’s iPhone to AT&T’s wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers,...

Fiddler in the Dell

Posted by Radimus on Aug 17, 2007 | Comments Off

The story seems to say the the cooked books were of a minor nature, but that it didn’t keep a number of heads from rolling.  The SEC will have the final word as always however. DELL, once the giant of the personal computer industry, has admitted that senior company executives “cooked the books” to hide declining sales and lacklustre company performance. Heads have rolled, and founder, chairman...

SOMA – The Smaato Open Mobile Advertising

Posted by Radimus on Aug 01, 2007 | Comments Off

While looking for some freeware goodies, I came across SmaatoCost which is an app to track minutes used, data transferred, and SMS message count. This looked like a nice alternative to the retail app SPB GPRS Monitor and more full featured than the free BatteryStatus.  Then I noticed something in the product description: For the update to the new version 2.1 of Smaato Cost you may have to downloadand install two...

Cell users are griping, and Washington is listening.

Posted by Radimus on Jul 30, 2007 | Comments Off

While I don’t want runaway legislation, the cell companies are getting a bit carried away with some things.  A 2 year contract with a hefty termination fee is a fair guarantee that customer service will not be a top priority. Then to be forced (or guided) to buy phones locked to a provider, which will cause the average consumer to have to start the 2 year contract cycle over with a new carrier… Aug....

Kameraflage: Your Camera Sees Better Than You

Looks like a very cool tech that will have application from the whimsical to the serious.  This would make a great watermarking technology… Until someone makes a filter. With Kameraflage, now you’ll be able to plant subliminal messages on T-shirts, movies and billboards that can only be seen with digital cameras. This context-sensitive display technology, developed by Sarah Logie and Connor Dickie, works...

Manage your life via SMS

Web apps that can be accessed and update via SMS can make even old and/or simple phones useful for some PDA like functions. The command line’s making a comeback, but the terminal window, keyword launcher and search box aren’t the only textual command interfaces-your cell phone has joined the party. More and more modern webapps let you interact with your data via SMS, updating and retrieving your information...

Japan unveils iPhone killer

Posted by Radimus on Jul 17, 2007 | Comments Off

Yet another entry in the, “Lets try and out iPhone the iPhone”. Specs aren’t that amazing and as a Japanese device it can’t be used in many other areas of the world, but market demand may fix that.   Ever since Steve Jobs announced the coming of the God Phone in January, industry analysts started taking bets on which cell-phone manufacturer would meet the Apple challenge first. My money has...
