After a long wait period, YouTube Mobile is finally here! Plus it’s made for mobile browsers that don’t have Flash support, meaning it works with the AT&T Tilt (provided you have HTC Streaming Media Installed).

Overall playback is seamless. Click on the watch video link and HTC Streaming Media automatically starts (worked from Pocket IE and Opera Mobile) and starts playing the video.

Needless to say the quality is not very good. The browsing however does allow you to login, view your favorites, add new things to your favorites, and mimic a surprising amount of functionality present in the main desktop version.

So check out YouTube Mobile at http://m.youtube.com and see what you think. Just remember you need HTC Streaming Media (or another similar program that will grab RTSP links).

Iris is currently in a technical preview but is free for non-commercial use, and hopefully will stay that way. However, I’ve used quite a few mobile browsers and Iris is already working it’s way into my favorite of the bunch.

Iris uses the open source WebKit rendering toolkit (what Safari uses), and I found it to be extremely accurate (screenshots included). Plus, best yet, it was fast. It didn’t have a lot of the hang time inherent to other mobile browsers, it was very fast and efficient at doing what it did. More after the break.

So some of you probably remember when I did an article on Motion Apps’ mDesktop program, that was really overall positive but had a few complaints to the bugs in the program. Well now I’m happy to announce that mDesktop version 1.1 is officially out, with a new revamped GUI, and new increased functionality, and you betcha, a whole lot less bugs. I had the opportunity to use this software first hand and I must say, I’m very impressed with the new version. The SMS function is much more streamlined now and visually appealing (visible to the right). Plus it functions much more smoothly. An extreme amount of the bugs have been worked out too.

New features have been added in of course. The system now autoconnects both over USB and Bluetooth connections to your phone. So now you can use mDesktop without having to physically tether your phone to your computer (if that was a big thing for you). More after the break, including details on winning a copy of mDesktop.

What some of us haven’t really taken into account is that Last.FM, being a lot more user friendly of a website, has a more open API (their scrobbler program is open source) and thus a bunch of enthusiasts have built a mobile scrobbler program specifically for Windows Mobile.

I’ve been using OpenPandora for the longest time

and thus I’ve used the integrated Last.FM module to scrobble my Pandora tracks, meaning I already had a list of songs that I frequently listened to and otherwise. More after the break.

The reason this phenomena occurs is because your cell phone (in particular GSM band phones, aka phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, etc) checks with the cellular network about once every 55 minutes or so to see if it’s still in the area. This is specifically the GSM band, which comes close to the frequencies of information sent over audio cables, essentially turning the audio cable into a antenna, which is thus transmitted into your speakers, creating the annoying buzz. Fix after the break.

Don’t get me wrong, I happen to be a big fan of Nokia smartphones, this article is not meant to bash Nokia smartphones in the slightest.

I took a short trip down Nokia lane a couple days ago in pondering purchasing an N95. As some of you already know, I already have an AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) which is a very powerful device that I’m very happy with.

However, something with the UNIX-ness of Symbian made me want to try it out again but, after closer inspection, I remember why, after literally countless hours of studying and deciding, I chose the Tilt.

The big reason was the QWERTY keyboard. I hate button mashing and lacking a hardware keyboard, I turn to my Tilt.

I also noticed that the Nokia uses a lesser chipset as well. Only 332Mhz (for the primary processor at least, I couldn’t find details about the secondary processor) as opposed to the Tilt’s 400Mhz dual core processor (one 400Mhz primary ARM11 processor and a secondary ARM9 processor running slower to process radio interactions and such). Correct me if I’m wrong though. More after the break.

Enter the world of embedded devices. Needless to say, your Tilt (herein called an embedded device) lacks a hard drive, so it needs some sort of involatile memory (id est, memory that does not get erased after power to the memory is cut) to store the OS (firmware) and other persistent data.

Embedded devices now days typically turn to a type of flash memory known as NAND flash, which tends to be a lot smaller and more economically feasible than NOR flash, albeit less resilient. More after the break.

Also, there now is a project to port TouchFlo 3D to the Tilt (entitled Manilla), but that’s another topic completely.

Again, TiltSite’s stance on the drivers is to keep on waiting. They’re not exactly stable right now, but hey, look at all the progress being made.

The drivers for the Tilt already have received their first update since the initial launch.

The updated version has a few changes, and I’ve had to do some searching to find out exactly what. Apparently the change has to do with the inner workings of the driver itself. The new version does this in a safer way allowing better compatibility.

Despite the update however, TiltSite still does not recommend that you update at this time. These drivers are still in an early stage and some of the included test software will cause your device to freeze. There are also a few other instances where it could cause a freeze as well.

Just hang tight and stay with us and we’ll keep you informed of updates and more information regarding drivers.

Just mind boggling. Want a good waterproof case? Well for $50-75 you soon may have it. That’s a pretty reasonable price in my mind for taking quite a few electronics no-no’s off of my list. Plus not to mention the wow’s you’ll get when you drop your phone or otherwise in your drink intentionally and pull it back out fully functional. Note: TiltSite nor anyone else recommends you do that.

The coating is not yet available but hopefully will be very soon. Unfortunately you’ll have to send it off to get the coating applied but even still, it’s a small price to pay considering the protection you’re getting.

If you’re like me then you have a cradle and also leave your Tilt in said cradle most of the time. Finally, you remove Tilt from cradle every time you get a text message or want to install a piece of software.

Well the days of doing that are finally over. Now we can leave the Tilt in it’s cradle and control the unit from our PCs (not to mention, text message with unprecedented speed and ease).

Now I was hoping to make this a video review but I’m currently away from my camera, hope you guys understand. But getting into the software, a significant amount of functionality has been packaged into a relatively small piece of software. A single installer on your PC, then just connect your Tilt (or other Windows Mobile based device) via ActiveSync, and hit Connect. The mDesktop software automatically downloads a small executable to your phone and executes it and the connection then negotiates and is established, boom you’re on your phone now. At first glance you’ll just get a dialer screen allowing you to call from your PC over your phone’s service (please note that the microphone and speaker are not brought to your PC with it at this time). A little disappointing that it doesn’t bring audio to your PC but it’s not that huge of a deal as it’s one of the only functions that requires removing the Tilt from it’s cradle and how often do people have headsets or similar to talk over their PCs with?

More after the break.
