I freakin love Mortplayer.

The screenoff/lock funtion has always worked flawlessly for me. My buttom mapping scheme makes it easy to control everything single handed. Here's how I map the buttons:

Button 1: Open Dialogue
BUtton 2: Next Screen (toggles between playlist and Main screen)
Button 3: Screensaver-Lock
BUtton 4: Default (which is today screen... doubles as minimize)
Action Button: Play/Pause
Left/Right: Prev/Next
Up/Down: Scroll Playlist
Button 5: Volume Down
Button 6: Volume Up

With that setup, I can easily access any thing I want very easily. I use the mypod skin, so I can get to eq. and shuffle mode with my fingers (since I rarely use them). The 'Next Screen' button is especially nice w/ the myPod skin so you can leave it on the awesome looking main screen, but then easily switch over to the playlist if you want to listen to a nearby song while in shuffle mode.

You might try enabling the 'Lock' feature in the screensaver mode. You also would want to get the latest versions at Mort's site. He has updated it significantly lately.
