I was faced with the same predicament when I bought mine. I opted for the 400 merely for the fact that I didn't want to wonder how it would be to have the faster version. In retrospect, I'm glad I did. I've been pleasantly surprised on the amount of stuff my axim will do, and as creep toward the Ax's full potential, I can't believe I even thought about going with the slower model.
On the other hand, if you're not planning on using too many of its applications, I'd definitely save the money and buy the 300
