No, I don't sync with my laptop, only my office desktop with Outlook.
Like you, I chose not to install the "bloated" Outlook on my laptop, but wanted a calendar, appointment, etc app to run and found this (I think it was recommended on a separate thread)
If you read the requirements, Activesync is required.
There appears to be a free demo, so give it a try.
