If you get the foldable one from Dell (Foldable is a misnomer, it is telescoping), then unlike other foldables that actually fold, it is one solid piece when extended, so oyu can use it on your lap just fine, and the top folds back and makes a stand, read the review for it here at Aximsite, and all the comments/addons to know more.
If you have to carry around an extra device anyway, you might as well have one that is more comfortable and capable for large data entry in the long run, for quick notes, you're probably better off just with the software entry.
