I don't know where you read you have to change the settings for your home network because that's not true (unless you are using a static IP, in which case the only solution besides changing them every time is to change to a dynamic IP at home).

The only thing you need to do at an open network it turn on the wireless and tel it to connect when the popup message appears. I generally recommend using "Work" (as the choice between "The Internet" and "Work") but this is less critical at a hotspot than on your home network.

If the hotspot requires payment, you typically need to log in through the browser at this point.

There are other add on utilities that some people have found helpful for connecting at hotspots. I think the most commonly used of these are WiFiFoFum (freeware), the Odyssey Client (included on the X51), and Wi-Fi® Companion.
