I had tried that and it didn't want to power down, but today I found a setting in the GPS software (Mapopolis) that gave me the option to override the system setting if the GPS was running. I changed it and now the X5 will power down after 3 minutes.

That's halfway there! Now if I could just get it to power up automatically.
