I had activesync 4.1 on my dell x5 and also received many error messages.
This is what I did.
Deleted the software completely from my computer through (Add/remove programs, Windows explorer, Search - look for Wcescomm.exe and Microsoft activesync.
Disconnected the pda [this is important] and rebooted the computer [winXP].
Reinstalled activesync 3.8.
In connection settings box, checked Allow usb connection settings and Show status only.
It worked for about a week with everything, caledar, inbox, files, avantgo, ect.
And then like you, I went into guest mode.
So, With my X5 connected, I opened device manager on my computer and deleted the Dell under Win CE USB devices - you can do this WITHOUT rebooting the computer, keep trying to delete if it asks you to reboot. Once it deletes and you hear the hardware disconnect sound, remove the Dell from its cradle, soft reset it and turn it off.
Returned it to the cradle, and my computer found new hardware named Dell Axim X5.
Activesync found its old partnership, updated, and I'm back in business.
Hope this works for you.
Microsoft activesync is a terrible program, but until there's a better one - keep
sinking, I mean syncing!
