Something important to note - when selecting your bit rate, keep in mind who the audience is, and what it's going to played through. If it's just you and a cheap set of headphones or the on board speakers, there is no point in wasting space on high quality audio you can't hear. If you're an audiophile and playing it through your high end car stereo a lot, then go for better.
But, if you're like me, who can't really distinguish the subtleties sometimes, save your space. I spent too much time in high noise environments in my youth, which affected my ability to detect subtle variations in sound. So, since my music on my Axim is pretty much just for me through my headphones, I tend to rip to the lowest possible bit rate that I can distinguish a difference. Other people who listen to my files complain, but if I can't tell the difference, and I ripped them for me, who cares? Oh sure, there are probably subtle nuances I'm missing, but I'd miss them anyway, so I go for the most music I can fit on an SD card, and still sound decent (to me). On the rare occasions that a particular song doesn't sound good, I go back and rip it to a higher level, until it sounds good
