No More Activations
Well, Microsoft won't give me any more activations, although it's been over 6 months since my last activation. In a short 2 year time span I had my work computer changed twice. Once, I changed jobs to a new office and I was given a new machine. Shortly thereafter, I had a sceduled system refresh and was given a new and improved system. Just work comuters alone ate up 3 of my activations.
PDA's ate up the other half. I did conserve my activations on the PPC, but I still used 3. First, work gave my a very old HP Jornada which I activated. I liked the PDA so much I wanted to buy my own that had BT and Wifi. Enter the x30H. Of course I had it replaced once, but I used the trick on this forum and didn't burn an activation. Then came my x50v. Love it and activated it. Another activation down the tubes. Now the next activation was my fault. I didn't save the activation on my x50v so I when I had to replace it because of a faulty SD reader, I was forced to activate a second x50v.
Anyway that alone leaves me at 6 activations. I did contact them once for activations because I changed my home computer about 2 years ago. It was Christmas 2004.
Anyway, I jsut built myself a new computer this February and now I can't activate it. Microsoft won't let me have any additions to my quota. I thought that you got a new one every sixmotnhs, but that was juat a rumor, I guess.
The part that bothers me the most about all this is the fact it doesn't stop or even make illegal downloading any harder. In fact, the only problems that arise for me surround the legal books I spend hard-earned money on. I want to purchase Stephen King's Cell so that I may read it on my x50v. Because I can't activate my computer this can't be done. Guess what? It is now easier, cheaper, and more convenient for me to find a free copy.
Way to go Microsoft! You're actually in a way encouraging those of us that "want" to pay the authors for their work to go download non-DRM copies because of analness with activations.
Anyone have any experience getting the sellers to recognize a second activation account? I buy almost all my books from Fictionwise and ebooks.com.
