In the GPS applet, go to the Access tab and uncheck "Manage GPS automatically". Then make sure that Activesync is not running. Start your software and have it start looking for the GPS on COM1 and then put your axim in the cradle. This will prevent Activesync from taking over the port when you put it in the cradle.
