not logged onto network? active sync

my office computer (Dell Inspiron with docking station running Windows XP and Outlook 2003) had a program installed (an electronic medical record program upgrade), then had a problem with Outlook requiring the windows service pack fix. Now my axim 5 won't sync to my outlook saying that I am unable to log onto the network and should try to log off and on again. I've rebooted, tried turning off the windows firewall and have had no luck. But I am able to sync on the same computer through the internet to Avantgo and Epocrates, so I must be on the 'network'. We tried reinstalling active syn 3.8 and still did not resolve the problem. My IT guy says that I/he could try uninstalling Outlook 2003 and reinstalling, but I am afraid that all of my dell laptop information in outlook will get lost and unrecoverable. I don't remember what I did with my original dell axim disk from 3 years ago. I'm not sure what to do. I'm thinking of moving up to the Axim 50 but really like my Axim 5. Any suggestions? Should I let my IT guy reinstall my Outlook? I'm not so confident that this will fix the problem, but I'm also not sure if I got a new handheld that the problem would be fixed.
