Avantgo is notoriously famous for that stalling. I dropped it because of that. I can't speak for the Johns Hopkins stuff.

Most of the time stalling like that is more related to the USB interface. Look in the System>device manager of the PC with the Axim installed and you should have a USB device called "Dell Axim USB Sync" there. If it isn't you aren't using the Dell USB drivers. For a lot of people that has been the main problem.

In any event, look to see if the drivers are correct.

The next best thing is that some people who are using hubs find it better to use the direct port on the PC, and those who have trouble on the PC are finding better success using hubs. USB is very flaky. Some folks even get better results from the ports on the back than on the front! Try combos until you get the one that works for you.
