I would think connection to the computer is the first step.
If your Axim connects it should make a clunking sound.

If you are connected, but Active Sync cannot see your Axim, try disconnecting the Axim, and from Active Sync delete the partnership (from File menu), this will clear a bunch of stuff, and if successful, when you reconnect it will ask if the profile from your Axim is the one you want.
