Windows XP is a 'current' operating system which still has support (Microsoft is talking about XP SP3 sometime this fall) and so is Mac OS X. Ditto Windows Vista, ditto Linux - and there are NO drivers which allow SD 1.1 card readers to read SDHC cards. It's not just the change to FAT32 that makes the difference as far as speed and capacity goes; the key is probably in any changes made to the SD standard to allow them to have Class 2, 4 and 6 speed ratings.

The lack of a standard measure for card speeds was a real problem with SD 1.1 and SD 1.2, especially as people began to use SD cards for digital cameras with 6, 8, then 10-12 megapixel resolutions which meant that the read/write operations involving files up to 5-7 MB in size. The implementation of the speed classes (which specify the MB/s they're capable of writing to, barring severe file fragmentation or reader/writer hardware issues) means they had to do something extra to allow themselves to advertise the maximum speeds with a specific 'standard' rating; this probably means traffic control hardware on the slot itself.
