To ensure your existing software works on your new phone, you'll need a phone that is a pocket pc and is not a smartphone. The difference is that a pocket pc has a touch screen and a smartphone does not have a touch screen.

You also need to make sure the pocket pc is running the windows mobile operating system. Some of the more recent Palm Treos are running the windows mobile and not the Palm operating system. This should be easy enough to confirm by reading the marketing material written about the device or by asking the sales staff.

Steer clear of any variant of blackberry since no pocket pc applications will work on blackberries and no blackberries run the windows mobile operating system.

I have an hw6925, which has a square screen, and I have not had a problem at all with running software that I purchased for my 320x240 pocket pc on the 240x240 screen. This was a problem when the first square screen pocket pcs were introduced, but I think many vendors have updated their software to accommodate the screen. I think there are still issues with games, so if you are big into pocket pc games, you'll probably want to work with a larger screen. You can probably research this on the software developer's website or by sending the developer an email. Even so, it does take some adjustment going from a 320x240 screen to a 240x240 screen.

Good Luck!
