Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is what you're doing now, because I'm pretty sure there is no supported code command for screen shutoff in PWMP. I tried to create a button once to do just that, but it caused the skin to not even be recognized by the program.
So the best thing to do is just keep on keeping on with what you're doing now.
