Tom Tom does not need a data connection unless you use its traffic updates or some other features that need a connection. For mapping and directions, and its normal functions, the built in GPS works fine, and no data connection is needed. While Tom Tom needs to be purchased, there is no monthly charge like TeleNav. It covers the US and Canada, including Alaska and Hawaii and takes about 1GB on the memory card.
