Memory card size and free RAM
I'm interested to get a 8GB SDHC for my Axim but I checked the forums and found out that the amount of free RAM would get less when memory card capacity goes up so I did some testings. Cards I used are :
1) Kingston Elite Pro CF 2GB
2) Kingmax SD 2GB
3) Sandisk SD 512MB
4) Canon MMC 16MB
So here are the results :
Condition = Amount of free RAM (MB)
No card (CF and SD slot empty) = 30.6
MMC 16MB = 30.5
SD 512MB =30.3
CF 2GB = 29.7
SD 2GB = 29.8
CF 2GB + MMC 16MB = 29.6
CF 2GB + SD 512MB = 29.4
CF 2GB + SD 2GB = 28.9
Here is the summary, amount of memory lost per MB :
Memory card capacity = amound of memory lost(MB)
16M = 0.1
512MB = 0.3
2GB = 0.8MB
2.5GB = 1.2MB
4GB = 1.7MB
From the results I can summarize that for every 512MB memory card capacity added, free RAM will be reduced to 0.2MB. So if I add a 8GB SDHC, the amount of free RAM will be reduced by 8/0.5x0.2 = 3.2MB. SDHC 8GB and 2GB CF would cost me 4MB! that means after a soft reset my Axim will get only 26.6MB of free RAM. Any comments from Axim owners with high capacity storage?
