The following may be the reason

turn off automatic updates on your computer reboot and try to sync

windows modules may not be consistent. run SFC /scannow

any malware running in your system may cause problems. (Check for malwares running SpyBot and Antivirus scanners).

os memory leak out basically called "ProcessHandleLeak". Check memory at testmem.com

NTFS Boot partition corrupt. (Run Chkdsk /f)

windows services are not configured properly (Check whether it is happening in Safe Mode also).

third party services running in background may cause this problem (Check in Safe Mode).

antivirus or firewall product running may freeze. (Try disabling antivirus/fw).

lastly, completely uninstall activesync if the problem persists. you should google this to COMPLETELY remove activesync. then reinstall and test.
