I do not have a PSP, but I am wondering.....
Was the UMD disc slot cover and batter cover problemic on your old PSP? I did not notice any sticking out of covers on my friend's old generation PSP.
Now for the advice: Buy a older generation, possibly used PSP on eBay, use surplus money saved to replace your DS :)
