I don't think the moderators' authority has been compromised in the least. Chris has always supported the moderators, and I believe he will continue to do so in the future. What blows a moderator's authority is inconsistency. We have consistently enforced the earlier policy ever since it was announced. I, and all the other moderators that discussed this change, are glad that the policy has been loosened.
At the time the retricted policy was enacted, other websites and forums had received C&D letters. We enacted the policy to protect Chris and the forum. Since that time, we have observed that forums and websites that have embraced these questionable ROMs have continued rocking along with no serious consequences. While we are not prepared to embrace these ROMs (no hosting of them), we do not wish to turn away users who need help (I, personally, have closed some of these threads, and it really hurts to do that).

Chris announced this change and even posted a poll before he did it. Doesn't seem sneaky to me at all. Did you miss these posts?
