Not to revisit an old topic, but the temperament of a pit bull and its likelihood of someday snapping and eating the neighbor's kid really depends upon its breeding. Originally bred to fight other dogs, a well-bred pit bull retains its instinctive respect for humans as alpha. Unfortunately, some people have selectively bred to remove this trait, and the "crazy" pit bulls look just like the animals with a better temperament. The dogs local to me are undoubtedly "bad" dogs, considering there is no way their owners could afford a well-bred animal.
