Boot camp today and in the 60's is very different. When I went you put
everything you wore & brought into a box that was shipped back home. No jewelry, pictures, money, wallet, etc could be kept. Married men could keep their wedding rings. Prescription glasses were kept until new one were issued by the Navy. Everything you wore was issued to you.
After two weeks you got your first mail. Which coulds have pictures you could keep. :)
Looking back, it was kinda fun. But, at the time, it was dudgery. Plus, we went 12 weeks and I think it's only 8 weeks now. Hint - don't go to Great Lakes boot camp in the winter. :(
