I downloaded the Clear Type applet, ran the wizard, selected the view that I wanted and reset Firefox to allow sites to select their own fonts. The result is as good as anything in IE (including IE8) and the page load times are significantly better.
OK, I'm sold: I'm moving to Firefox. :)

No problem, although I assure you it was a lucky guess on my part, rather than a shining example of higher thinking!
Diagnosis aside, however, the outcome is a good one; FF3 is a fantastic browser, and there are innumerable add-ons so that you can view the web the way
you want to. It's more or less the first thing I install when I buy a new laptop.
