I am an HP rx5915 owner and had the same problem with Msoft ActiveSync as described in this thread. I tried the OP's advice but the dat-burned ActiveSync still would not let up. But I realized after 2x-checking my handheld AS settings that it was the AS on my PC that was driving the update process. So I opened up AS Connection Settings on my PC and unchecked "Allow USB connections" and that as they say was that. Now the auto-sync doesn't happen anymore and I can always re-enable USB connections when I want it to sync, and stil keep the handheld plugged into the USB port to stay charged. Hope this helps others.
Oh yeah, just want to add this: I just discovered how to turn off AS on the handheld, too. In AS on the handheld, pick "Menu"->"Connections" and uncheck the "When cradled" box and life becomes happy again.
